Oooold magnetic drill press
I went to a little family get together today and found the oldest magnetic drill I've ever seen in the garage. I only had my phone with me (which I've been carrying on my hip for the last 3 years) so the pics aren't the best but I thought some of you might be interested in seeing it.

Re: Oooold magnetic drill press
I might have you beat.
I found an old one myself not that long ago taking inventory of my buddy's shop after he passed away. Drill runs, but the electro magnet doesn't. There was a note on it that said the mag looses it's power after an hour of continuous use ( tag from the auction I think he got it from years ago), but it doesn't seem to work at all right now. I'm hoping it's something simple like a bad connector or a bad switch, but I really don't have the spare time to F with it right now.

Re: Oooold magnetic drill press
I would love to have a magnetic drill press. However, for me, they are extremely limited, overpriced and the annular cutters cost a small fortune.
![]() Does yours have a chuck for annular cutters or is it limited to regular drill bits? |

Re: Oooold magnetic drill press
The one my buddy had just has the standard chuck shown in the picts. unfortunately. I missed out on a real steal at my local used tool place 2 months ago. They had an almost new Milwalkee come in cheap, but someone put it on layaway and started making payments on it. I'm like you, I don't have enough real "need" for one, but they do come in handy when you do.
They do make adapters to run annular cutters with standard chucks. I looked into them this spring for a job I planned to do with my mill. I may go ahead an pick one up as I found a few cheap annular cutters at a surpluss place this spring. Always nice to have options.

From a guy's never even seen one of the things in person: Must use coil(s) to generatethe pull, so seems like worst case would be rewind the coils. I like solid old tools, the kind the last longer than the operater; I tend to err on the side of fix it as opposed to scrap it. Cheers, Rufus |

Re: Oooold magnetic drill press
That is a neat old drill alright. Be nice if you could get it to work.
I have a old beat up Milwaukee with a 3/4" chuck myself. It's not got the variable speed option in the base but it comes in handy every now and then. It's just a heavy beast to move around.

Re: Oooold magnetic drill press
Irish, I have that B&D's brother! They are awesome! The main difference is mine is reversable. If you need any info on it, LMK.

Re: Oooold magnetic drill press
Thanks for the offer. It's not mine actually. I just saw it at a relatives place and thought it unique enough to take a pic and post it. I've got a old Milwaukee mag drill myself.

It's nice because it can be dropped away from the base with a big hand nut, and the post is hollow so it can be anchored with threaded rod in tight quarters. Has a much smaller envelope size than Milwaukee; maybe more twist too. But the Bux stops with DSW! ![]() Good Luck Last edited by denrep; 07-10-2010 at 11:46 PM. |

Re: Oooold magnetic drill press
Yeah, I also like the fact that the drill motor plugs into the mag base. I can unplug the drill motor and put a speed controller in-line to vary the speed. Since it is after the mag, I don't effect the mag's holding power. If I remember correctly, my drill's speed is around 330rpm. It is a great speed usually, but not always. Anyone have info on the annular cutter adapters? Never thought about using them, but I like to be informed on options!

Re: Oooold magnetic drill press
Cool old drill. B&D build very good tools for many years. When I was gainfully employed I had a Milwaukee and used annular cutters in it's regular 3/4" chuck. I had a machinest build an adapter. Pretty slick gadget.
