Millermatic 180
I'm looking at this welder & have a question. It has the Auto-Set function where you can dial in your wire size & material thickness & off you go.
Lets say you want to weld a 3/16" piece to a 1/8" or a 14 gauge piece, which setting do you channel in when using the Auto-Set function? |

Re: Millermatic 180
I've never used an Auto Set unit but if it were me and I was welding 1/8 to 3/16 I'd start at '7' and go from there adjusting up or down and wire speed as needed. 3/16 to 14ga probably the same and 'wash' the puddle from the 3/16 into the 14ga but still adjust as needed.
Auto Set doesn't mean one never has to make voltage and/or wire feed speed changes to get proper results but is intended to get you as close as possible from the start to minimize adjustments. The rest comes with practice and personal experience.

Re: Millermatic 180
I've only experimented with an auto-set machine once and we had the wrong wire in the machine to be usign that feature anyways so basicly it was pointless to try it. However, I agree with Duane, I would choose 7 as a starting point on the voltage dial for 1/8 to 3/16 and 6 for 1/8 to 14ga and adjust from there.
With the auto-set feature, you're only adjusting one parameter and the machine is adjusting the other to match what you set. I assume it's voltage that's user settable and the wire speed is controlled by the machine. On my MM350P in pulse mode, it's the other way around. I set the wire speed and the computer sets the voltage to match and provides a voltage 'trim' adjustment with the arc length control.

Re: Millermatic 180
I used this machine today & I must say it was impressive!.
The Auto-Set works great, however running it in manual gives you greater options to truly fine tune it but none the less a great overall package! |
