Time for a cold cut saw

Not the deli kind...

Looking at a Makita 12" Dry Cut Saw.

15 amp motor
60 tooth carbide tip blade

On for $529CAD.

What do you guys think? I'll have to run a dedicated circut to it, but there are only about 3 feet between the panel and the shop, so that isn't a problem. Anyone else have one? Likes? Dislikes?

Just curious how well do you think the blade will last? I was reading a review on another site, Dewalt was claiming up to 1200 cuts before their blade needs sharpening. Everyone that used it said 300-400 cuts was closer, some being much lower, but admitted that they pushed too hard and may have damaged the blade.

I got the exact you've got and I'm happy. Had a slight problem with a little bit of oil leaking from the casing.

Apparently the grease packed in the gearbox caused the seepage when it got hot. They repacked it with better grease and put in new oil at no charge.

Enjoy.

Don (dda) and I have the DeWalt DW872. I have cut some large stuff where the 14" blade was an advantage, but it's rare. I've heard the Makita's 12" blade is a little more forgiving when it comes to flexing, but I've not noticed a big flexing problem with the stuff I do.

I've dulled mine by cutting steel of unknown origin. Turned out to be hard stuff... Bedframe is a no-no also. Keep an abrasive around!

Hey, the Mac is back!!

Yup, mine is great and still yellow. Keeping it clean for the moment. I am having oil leaking as well. My warranty is almost up, too. Better haul it in..like I have time for that.

FWIW, I estimate I have about 900+ cuts on the original blade. It is definitely getting too dull. May need to swap soon. I cut some cold rolled 1 1/2 solid....dat did it in!

Chris, I believe Mac meant from the original group way back at the beginning. There are a few, but not too many. The original fracas cleaned out most. A few stayed, and a couple have come back...but that is it.

Yup, DeWalt DW872. I really like it. I am starting over with the blade, though. Had a slight accident a few nights ago while cutting a weld plate in two. Should have ground the bead down instead of shimming it. I still have not found the shim. The plate jambed up the blade and bent it pretty good. It only lost parts of five teeth, bent the blade and also bent a 1/4 welded coupon almost in half. Learned my lesson.

New blade has 12 cuts on it and counting.

Well, it was nothing I hadn't done several dozen times before. I guess I was on borrowed time.

My thinking is that it was the dull blade that helped it along. It was acting "grabby" just a little before it happened......... I have to do the same cuts tomorrow. I will be grinding the welds down first...I only have one more blade left.

Where are you buying your blades, Don? I need a new one soon and it's time to start looking around.
