If you get and post the information from the plate, specifically the model number, that can be looked up to see the specs. Also, a picture from the front might be helpful. Looks like a stack of change gears towards the right back of the picture, but I can't see well enough to be sure.

Strange looking South Bend. Doesn't appear that the tailstock is sitting on the V-ways. The drive belt swivel/idler is either a very early South Bend or another make entirely.

Re: for sale vintage south bend metal lathe

Marc,
Look on the top of the rear flat section on the right end ( near the tail stock) and you will find a set of numbers and perhaps a couple letters stamped in the bed.... at least 6 numbers.
That is the serial number of the unit..You will probably have to clean the area real good with steel wool to see the numbers.
if you find them please E-Mail me at joebiplane@comcast.net thank you that number will tell me what year the machine was built

Re: for sale vintage south bend metal lathe

Marc,
that machine is looking a little rough with those beds rusted like that, it will need a really good cleaning that won't score the beds just to detrmine what kind of shape they're in, rust is nobody's friend. A good cleaning is in order, you might find that it sells faster. Try Naval Jelly to remove the rust and then give it a good oiling, particularly on all precision surfaces, but not drive surfaces. I think it wil need a decent servicing, looks like it's been hiding for some time. I see a lot of Atlas, Craftsman and others around here, mostly slightly larger machines (6-10 in. swing). Not often one shows up in that size or with that old style tool post 'round here.
