1982 Chevy 1-ton Crew Cab Dually with a 454 BB

I put this little package together to replace the tired old diesel my truck had. My wife picked out all the billet specialties goodies. I completely removed all the brackets with an air chisel and about vibrated my arms off. Replace everything with Stainless steel hardware. I sandblasted the entire frame and powdercoated all the items previously removed. There is a lot of custom work on this truck, but it's just a weekender we use to haul the boat and the RV around. I even put airbags on it for a smooth ride...nice. Hope you enjoy the pictures. I know it's not welding related...well I did do a lot of cleanup on the frame, but it's not something you can see AFTER I did it.

My dad has a similar truck...just not in similar condition. His is an 82 dually 454 also , just not crew cab...400,000 miles on it and many BILLIONS of gallons of gasoline(he also has a 76 model with a 350 4-bolt main, but the driver door fell off). He has hauled a 20 foot cattle trailer with it all of both truck's natural lives. I am actually heading that way now...I'll get a snapshot or two just to show what a chevy CAN look like....keep in mind, these pictures are not for the weak of stomach or for folks that restore chevies and have heart problems.

Looks cool! With the way gas prices are going, I'm keeping a 350 in my truck. When I actually get a another truck(late 70's, early 80's Chevy dually), it'll have a 350 and a 4spd in it.

Well, I have two of these trucks. The one above as shown with a 454. The other one is an 82 Standard Cab, long bed, single rear not a dually. It had the same exact 6.2liter diesel in it and it ran great. I made a bonehead move and blew a head gasket the day AFTER I repaired the A/C. Bummer. That was in 1998. I decided no more diesels. So I am installing a chevy 350 (Dealer) crate motor and the original 700r4 in it. This will be my everyday driver truck as it should get better mileage than the 454 truck. It was a tough decision. If you have ever been behind the wheel of a Chevy BB, there is, as they say, no substitute for Cubic Inches.

Only thing sounds better than a V-8 is a bigger V-8
I do like them large V-8's but the price of gas got me looking a lot more at diesel

Yeah I agree the big blocks are very cool, if I had one in my truck I'd run it. If my truck had a factory BB it would've been a 396, it had a 350 from the factory but this truck has had maybe 3 different engines and 2 transmissions. I'm also thinking about getting a truck with the 6.2L diesel, hopefully I can find one.

I have had two trucks with 6.2 diesels. I would advise you to not get that. Get one with the 6.5 and turbo. Install the banks turbo system on it and it is good to go.

Thanks for the warning! I just looked at a nice 1980 Chevy 3500 dually earlier, not sure what engine it has but it does have a 4 speed. I'm gonna go look at it again tomorrow. They want $3,500 for it, it's not too rusty but it looks like a fixer-upper.
