Wire size for an Extension cord

I would like to make an extension cord for my Cart to haul it outside.

30 amps max But i would like to run 75 feet?

will 10-3 SOW cable be fine or do i have to go to 8-3?

You can use 10/3 for your MM175

It draws 20amps at the rated output of 130amps and even if you draw more amps you Can't do it for any amount of time that would affect the Cord due to the duty cycle.

If you can get the 8/3 Cord for cheap then go ahead but it is rather pricey by the Foot.

Home Depot sells a 100' 10/3 cord with 5-15 connectors, remove those and replace with 6-50 connectors.

probably better off just purchasing a 50' and a 25' Welder extension cord

probably gonna cost about $200.00

Try Ebay. I bought a very nice 50' 8-3 cord with plugs for just a bit over $100. Not a cheapy cord either.

not trying to thread jack, is this for a 110 machine? I need to do the same thing for my welder and I am unsure of what size cord to use. I was thinking of making my own and buying the materials from an electrical supply house,

For a 120v machine 100'

HD sells a Ridgid 10/3 Cord with the correct 120v ends on it

but I would buy 2 12/3 50' cords

I notice a huge diffence in how my 120 volt welder runs when plugged into a 25' 12-3 cord compaired to my new 50' 10-3 cord.
Both cords were plugged into the same outlet.

One morning I had welded up some brackets with the welder plugged into it ussual outlet in the barn. It ran great as ussual. Then I needed to weld the brackets to the trailer but needed an extention cord to reach. so I grabbed my shortest big cord I had, a 25' 12-3 cord. I laid down a couple welds fighting it the whole way and ended up grinding them all out.
I took the welder back into the barn thinking something was wrong with it. I plugged it into the outlet and it was back to welding good like before. I called my electrician buddy and he brought over a 10-3 50' cord put ends on it and my welder runs just like its plugged into the wall.

I am not sure about braided verses solid but I know the wireing to the plug in the barn is 12-3 solid and the cords are braided. I think that is the differnce?

I got as 100 ft 10/3 cord this thing is thick I shall see what it does when plugged in.

Braided, we call it stranded, versus Thick, we call it stranded.

There is no difference in the electrical conductivity between these two kinds of wire, at 60 HZ.

Stranded is generally preferred because it is more flexible and resists damage from vibration. Solid is less expensive, and easier to connect to receptacles (outlets).

Most buildings are built to meet a price, not a quality.
