How much do you think this ring gear weighs?

I was asked about removing this ring gear from the building it is in, just trying to make a guesstimate on how much it weighs.

The picture is not the best because it is a picture of a picture but you can get the idea from it. I haven't seen it yet but the info given to me was as follows.

The gear stands 101 1/2" tall, 5 3/4" wide and from the edge of the teeth to the inside edge is 3 3/4 thick". Any guesses?

What is the composition of the ring?

Re: How much do you think this ring gear weighs?

Assuming that the cut gears have a 'real' thickness of 3.25" vs the measured 3.75",

Use a diameter of 101" (x 3.14) to get a length (circumference) of ~317",

then 317 x 5.75" x 3.25 = 5924 cu. in.

and 5924 cu. in. x 0.28 lb/ cu. in. = 1659 pounds,

this assuming further that it's steel as it appears to be.

I had assumed "edge of the teeth" to mean the tooth's root.

That is why I often tell posters that using good, clear, concise English is important. When details are not carefully given, often a number of interpretations are reasonable. Since we didn't base any bid on this one (and no prize was offered), I guess it doesn't matter too much here.

FWIW, if you were/are correct and we assumed the "effective" depth is 4.0 inches, that would give a value of about 2042 pounds using my other figures. Within 2% of your guess.

Re: How much do you think this ring gear weighs?

I calculated the area of the entire circle (3.1415 X 50.75 X 50.75 = 8091.4)
I then calculated the area of the center of the ring (3.1415 X 47 x 47 = 6939.8)
I then subtracted the center of the ring from the entire circle from (8091.4 – 6939.8 = 1151.6)
I then multiplied the area of the ring by the thickness (1151.6 X 5.75 = 6621.7 cu in)
I then multiplied cu in of the ring (6621.7 X .29 = 1920.3 lbs)
I was not able to calculate the weight of the voids between the teeth because you did not supply tooth geometry this needs to be subtracted from the above weight to get the correct weight

Re: How much do you think this ring gear weighs?

d=101" so c= 26.44'
5.75" x 3.75"= .479' x.3125'=.148sf ignoring tooth profile x26.4lf=3.95cf assuming steel @ 490#/cf=1936 pounds.

Re: How much do you think this ring gear weighs?

Just a thought for you fellows who need to figure the tooth cutouts, try figuring a ring with a ID from the root of the teeth and the current OD and half that amount which would account for the cutouts and add that to the remainer of the ring. You would need to know the depth of the teeth to do this. Have fun.

Re: How much do you think this ring gear weighs?

Wife sez: " One thousand, two hundred and ten pounds. I can tell just by looking at it."

I say: Does not matter how much it weighs. Four strong guys. Set it on the floor. Roll out without tipping or going too fast. Flop onto trailer deck, and move around with bars till happy.

Carry on.
