Any underwater welders on here?

"see topic title"

It looks like an "interesting" career to say the least.
I've heard from some people that there is plenty of work around, other people say almost nothing is welded underwater anymore.

So what are your thoughts on the subject?

Yeah, I'm a Diver/ Welder down here in the Gulf. It's slow right now, but it's a feast or famine type of industry. I've been at it for 11 years, and it's been pretty good to me...

Have a real good friend whos has been welding pipe for 49 years. He did underwater welding for quite a few years for the company he worked for 35 years. Its not all its cracked up to be according to him. He said there is no glory in it as everyone makes it out to be. He said its a real PITA too.

It seems like if you had the means to chase the work you would make good money. But if you don't want to travel then it is probablly feast or famine like the other guy said.

Re: Any underwater welders on here?

We don't really "chase" the so much. If you work for one of the companies who actually do the work, they'll keep you busy enough. I worked for a company called Phoenix Int. for 10 years, and now I'm with Oceaneering. I've noticed that there is a lot of misinformation on this site about hyperbaric welding...

You won't be a underwater welder.. You'll be a commercial diver.. My opinion is to stay out until a storm hits again. Mostly alot of burning now more than welding. I've been out here for almost 2 years now.
