1958 gas pump that sings!!!

Hello again everyone. You all look like your enjoying all the new projects everyone has posted so I figured it was time to bore the heck out of you all again by showing you all another one of my strange fabrications/ modifications/ customizations thingies that I did a few years ago. This gas pump started out it's life pumping fuel back in 1958 in the town I live in. I purchased the thing three years ago and while I was tearing it down I had a vision of a TV in it. I started out by doing some major mods on the thing and it ended up with the TV, a three disc DVD and a VCR in it. It was allot of work just trying to get the right components to fit in there but it all worked out in the end. I did all the paint and graphics. I also had to make a filler plate where the large glass window was in the front to make it look right. Wanting to show you all something a little different I added a video of the thing working. I promise you that the picture is much better than it seems but I had to reduce the quality on the camera to fit it all in. This thing really makes a great conversation piece. A friend asked me why and the only answer I could give is "Why not". With the price of gas where it is these days I sing each time I fill up but it sounds much different than what's on this video. Hope you all like what I've done and thanks for looking. Paul

My only question is, why would you paint it and give it logo's for something it was not part of. Let it have it's hertage and keep the Gas pump name.

Just my two cents.

On a lighter side. Looks great, and nice to see what others mind think when they see something.

That's a fair question and actually one that I wrestle with whenever I go to change the total look of something I'm restoring. To be honest I get terrible bored restoring things back to it's original look. By doing the things I do I get to play with ideas I have and apply them in a way I think would work. This old pump was getting ready to be sent to the bone yard when I purchased it. After debating weather I would do anything with it at all I decided to do it the way I did so it would be something very different plus it would fit into the theme I already have around it. By doing with it what I did It is a more functional and in my opinion a more fun item to look at. I guess it's like taking an old classic car and hot roding it. Some think it's great to do so while others thing it's about the biggest crime there is. To each his own but I do appreciate the question and the compliment from you and the others. Paul

Fantastic!!! Obviously you are someone with a very active imagination.

I do wonder where you find all this stuff. Also I do love the CokeCola themes but I'm thnking this may be a bit overboard for a gas pump. Unless of course you have that hose hooked up to a bulk supply of Coke.

I'm a big Coke fan myself drinking the stuff every day morning to night ntil my doctor got on me about the caffiene. Unforutnately not a big collector but everyonce in a while find something that I like. I sometimes wonder if the marketing has damaged my brain.

By the way keep things & pis coming, it looks like you have a room full of stuff there.

Some stuff needs to be restored, other stuff begs to be modified. One of the local hunter/sportsmen where I grew up took an old 57 chevy apache truck and turned it into a jacked-up hunting buggy. At first, I thought "what a waste of a classic truck", but it has grown on me. Just a thought.

BTW, 4shorts...
this stuff looks habit forming...but, there are much worse habits. again, very nice work.

So you guys have coca cola over there, too?

Re: the restoration vs modification debate. Years a ago I lived in a street and I used to walk past a young guy everyday who was restoring a Holden Gemini. Now, a Holden Gemini is a very ordinary car. Think Toyota Corolla. I thought at first he going to modify it, but nope, he was restoring it.
After about a year I stopped one day and said: "you know when you've finished, all you're going to end up with is a Holden Gemini?" He nodded slowly and smiled. I walked on.

OK, I think my comment was misunderstood. I agree with the restore Vs. Mod debate. I have that same problem with two motorcycles I have. One is a 75 Goldwing( 1st year goldwings were produced), the other is just a XJ650. My concern was changing it from a Gas Pump to a Coke Machine. I think the Mod into a entertainment center was pure genius. I was concerned that the mod. could have be done but left the history of the material it was made from.
I hope this makes sense.

Partagas,
I think what you said makes good sense...why not make a gas pump entertainment center, instead of a coke pump(?!) entertainment center, right?...I was just adding another point of view. I guess my example didn't exactly mesh up with the point you made thought, did it?

just a XJ650
Warning: Tangent coming up.

Just an XJ650! They were a great bike - shaft driven. I had 2 of them at one stage.

I rode one around Australia in the late 80s - 19,000klm in 16 days (3 of those days spent in Perth).

I needed a new rear tyre in Perth and one in Darwin. The bike ran like a dream.

I sold it the week after I got back and haven't ridden another bike since.

Ah, those were the days...

Heck no, you weren't misunderstood and I really can see your point about the pump. The thing was with me is that the old pump really didn't mean diddly squat to me so I wanted to do something off the wall with it so I made the entertainment center out of it. The reason for the Coke theme was that in my collection the two basic themes I use is Shell Oil and Coca Cola so the pump ended up in the Coca Cola section of the collection. It does say "The beverage that will give you gas".

This project started out just as a joke but everyone in our town who have seen it loves it. I also have done some fire fighting items one of which I dedicated to the fire fighters who lost there lives at the WTC. I may post that some time if anyone is interested in seeing it.

As I said before. You asked a legit question and I appreciate your thoughts. Hey being a Goldwing owner myself you can't be too bad. Paul

Hi everyone. Here's a few more pics of the back of the pump/TV entertainment center. Sorry about the quality of these pics but they were taken with an old camera a few years ago and I didn't want to pull the beast out from the wall to take better ones but you'll see how I did the side that "no one will see". Paul

Well since I have the Twin Towers as a Tattoo, I would love to see your work for them. Also after seeing your extra touches the price of the soda. Also on your other work you seem to go the extra mile to make it a one of a kind master piece. I think you should start a website with your toys.........
