Re: peanuts

Definitely a southern thing. I can't tell you how many country roads I have driven down in the south and right in the middle of nowhere is a guy on the side of the road with his truck, car or something else mobile with a small sign for "boiled peanuts." I have yet to stop. I have to believe there is something to them. Then, I eat the peanut whole anyway.

Re: peanuts

Yup it's a southern thing for sure. Nothing better than a bag on the way to the beach or on the way home. Messy, but lots of fun. My wife is a YANKEE and doesnt get it either so I just boil a batch and get busy. 'Course I live in the peanut capitol of the the world so we get em nearly year round here. Too bad my dialysis doc disagrees with them, but hey I just cut the phosphor and pottasium in other foods to make up.

Re: peanuts

boiled peanuts are wonderful!!

My recipe:

Zatarayin's Crab Boil - to taste (for me a lot)
Cayenne Pepper - to taste (for me More than a lot)
Salt - Never too much always too little

The secret to getting the salt right is in the nature of the peanut. It will only absorb so much. So when you boil your peanut, it doesn't matter if you have too much salt. at the last peanut boil we reused the brine from batch to batch and added 3-4 lbs each time. the last batch of peanuts tasted the same as the first batch. We boiled 500-600lbs. mmm-mmm good!

The best way to boil peanuts is to bring your pot to boil and boil your peanuts when the meat turns soft, turn the heat off and let the peanuts sit.when they absorb all the salt they are going to absorb they will sink. Those will be the best ones. Typically at a live peanut boil the peanuts are at their best. The ones the next day that sank are.

by the way, we are talking about boiling green peanuts.

Re: peanuts

You can't throw an elbow at a flea market in the South without knocking over a bag of boiled peanuts. The last time I had boiled peanuts a car pulled in next to me burning oil and running so rich I couldn't stomach it. Ever since then I've associated the smell and the gag reflex with boiled peanuts. My loss is your gain.

Re: peanuts

MMMM mmmm. I loves me some boiled (pronounced balld) peanuts. Good job Ed!

Now I'm hungry for some.

The spiced up ones with cayenne and Zatarins are great!

You've got to eat them while there still hot to really get it.

Re: peanuts

So they are "balld" () when they are not yet ripe and in the shell and eaten in the shell?
