The rotor is toast??

Code 9656
Model WP 225 G7
Serial #A1181012
Onan 16 hp (XSI?) w/filter

Auction item, represented to work good. The motor seems to be perfect. No weld or 110 output so I took the cover off.
I am guessing that there are more problems.
I have not determined the proper rotor, possibly $800 and up.
Any help (or sympathy) appreciated.

John

Re: The rotor is toast??

Id take it back to the auctioneer, and explain it to them.

They represented something that worked, when it was obviously a smoothly running boat anchor.

Re: The rotor is toast??

Agree with Lanse. The engine may have run well, but there is a whole other part. Ask them for _documentation_ that they tested the welder, or even put a tool into a 110 outlet. Or had an electrician even take a look at the welder. Anything to prove they gave the welder some thought. Be nice but firm. Casually mention a BBB complaint, or a review of your experience online. Good luck.

Re: The rotor is toast??

That breaks my heart, my rotor looks nothing like that... Slip rings look toast as well... at least not brass colored like mine...

edit..

I dont see brushes in the holders, did you ohm the rotor? Slip ring to Slip ring should be like 4ohms I THINK. Duanne knows far better than me.

Theres also a flashing diode with a fuse in-line, if its blown, you wont get anything but an idleing engine...

Re: The rotor is toast??

My first question would be what was paid for it?

Yes, it was represented as working and obviously can't and if you just want your money back then I would talk to the auction company as others have already suggested. Especially if you have no need for or desire to have a good running 16hp Onan worth a several hundred that could be used to replace a dead one on a like machine if you found one.

If you wanted to keep it, you may be able to negotiate a reduced price with the auction company but I think that would be a long shot. Keep in mind the crank tapper will only fit Lincoln units and not Millers that used a different tappered crank output.

For a re-wind on the rotor, looks like Eurton Electric http://eurtonelectric.com/ (catalog pg. 57) will run between $345-450.00 depending on actual rotor dimentions plus shipping to/from California but I would check the stator windings (exciter windings in particular), reactor and output rectifier out first before making the investment.

Re: The rotor is toast??

I know a guy who bought a dozer at an auction. When he started it and when he went to move it, it would not steer correctly. He pitched a bitch to the auctioneer and they refunded his money.

So if it was represented as a working unit, not just a running unit, I would go and try. Any reputable auctioneer should make it right.

Re: The rotor is toast??

I have bought and sold at several auctions. The key is is they said it runs or its is in good working order. you already said it runs so they were representing it correctly. auction companies rarely test equipment. sometimes you get stuck with a POS. If they said it was working correctly then its probably what the seller told the auction company. in that case be quick about contacting them before they send payment to the seller.
The key is what did u pay for it? I sold a hot water pressure washer at auction and made it clear itthat it needed a new pump. autioneer said nothing about it when it sold ut only sold for like $65 so no biggie. was also documented in the email i sent the auction co listing what I wanted to sell.

If you do buy at auction you will occationally get duped. its just the nature of the game. I have lost money on some stuff broke even on others and made money on some. if you strip the copper or motors out of it an recycle it you can get some money out of it and probably sell a good running Onan engine easy. electric motors are 60 cents a lb and copper is over $2 a lb...

Ya just missed out too. I sold a good weldenpower 225 that I bought for the choke at auction a couple weeks ago to fix my ranger 8, the generator and slip rings were in good condition, had a missing/blown engine

Re: The rotor is toast??

I paid $850.
Oh, but it was such a clean unit and started / ran so good.
Auction fever.
It was a farm auction, I will first try the owners.

That got me chuckling.

Too bad about the rotor though.

Re: The rotor is toast??

I've seen a welder like that with burnt windings and blackened slip rings before when the owner started the unit up and forgot that the work and electrode clamps were both clipped to the rail of his trailer and let it run for a while as a direct short. That one was a Miller.

Re: The rotor is toast??

The owners have offered 2 options. Return the welder & all of the money back or about 1/2 back and I keep the welder. Honorably outfit!
I will probably return the welder out and start over.
