looking for a basic welding/cutting safety course

Fellas,

My company has about twelve guys across the country doing service work. Recently, we have expanded the scope of our work and now some of these guys are doing some (very) basic hot work. Mostly just O/A cutting and some grinding. I was recently on a job with a few guys and had to shut it down. They were down in a conveyor tunnel torch cutting, on top of galvanized grating, with a torch that had no flashback arrestors, using hobby sized tanks and way exceeding the 1/7th rule.

I brought them all up and outside and we had a meeting about the situation. Now I am concerned about this and want to ensure the safety of my coworkers.

Is there any online course that will give the safety basics to complete newbies? Any standardized class they can attend in different regions of the country? Until we get this resolved, upper management has decided that my travel is greatly increasing. That's fine with me as long as everyone is safe.

Advice?

You might check with your local votech school instructor to see if he'd be willing to put a course together for you. I bet if you contact Lincoln or Hobart they can either point you in the right direction, or set up a training program to fit your needs assuming you have enough people to fill a class.

Re: looking for a basic welding/cutting safety course

The problem I am faced with is there are guys from TX to WY to NJ that need this. I can fill a class if I pull guys from the shop, I may just need to fly everyone in for it.

I was hoping there is some specific OSHA class that I can get seats for in different regions and keep everyone out in the field and the company on schedule.

Good call on the manufacturers. I'll get an email out to them.

Re: looking for a basic welding/cutting safety course

You may want to look at a company called Affordable Safety Training. Although I haven't used it, they do have a welding, cutting and brazing OSHA compliance kit. I have used thier materials to impliment a Lockout/Tagout program and Hazzardous Communication program. There training materials are very good and I especially liked the fact that they give you participant worksheets and quizes which help you document that you did the training and that the participants did at one point grasp the materials.

Re: looking for a basic welding/cutting safety course

Jmtebbens,

I went to welding school in 09 and before we could even get into the shop wehad to pass 3 safety tests. Then everytime you started a new process, new safety test. My teacher gave me a packet full of stuff for doing mobile work(because I already had the company started) and it was very detailed, but kind of a study at your own pace deal. If I can find the packet in my office, I'll be glad to scan it(roughly 50 pages) and email it to you in a PDF. Pm me your email address and I'll see what I can't find tommorow.
