Re: lodge and shipley lathe
Looks like there's lots of room at the end of the bed to set your coffee cup down!
Have you tried Practical Machinist or Home Shop Machinist? The folks there should be able to point you in the right direction. Some thoughts...are the legs original? I see supports from the bed into the chip pan in three spots, but only 2 sets of legs instead of 3. Andrew P.S. Found the following on lathes.co.uk...http://www.lathes.co.uk/lodgeshipley/ Last edited by Andrew_D; 08-09-2011 at 10:03 PM. |

Re: lodge and shipley lathe
Idacal,
There is a fella over on the Practicalmachinist.com site named JohnOder. If you post the pic in the antique machinery section, he will pretty much pinpoint your machine's age. Looks like a nice old beast. Plenty of distance bewtween centers. Grant

$20 bill says John has the catalog from L&S from the year it came out. He is an amazing guy and a tremendous resource.

Re: lodge and shipley lathe
thanks guys Im heading over to that site. The bow in the bed is an optical illusion the strap in the middle is lose, strictly for dot, and I do have the third leg some body put rollers under this thing to move it around so I have to shim the the middle leg.

![]() He will have the answers for you. OT, I was making some very small gears to fit an existing assembly with fixed centers. I needed to make a 4:1 reduction while still utilizing the fixed centers. With all the calculations we had done, we could not peg the right numbers. John came back with the calculations and gear cutter, pitch, in shot order. Cut the 3/4" gears and they worked perfectly! This guy is a dang genius!!!

Re: lodge and shipley lathe
He has gone out of his way to help me already. Tried doing a little turning today my chips are coming off blue though. The gearing is taking me a while to figure out. its a lot of fun though.

Just slow it down until you are getting a nice clean chip(s). Make sure the cutting edge of the tool is sharp. Have fun with it and be careful! Never try changing the chuck with power on. There is a thread over on offroadfabnet.com somewhere that shows the remains of a man that was tore in half in a machine smaller than yours. Literally tore in half and everything from above the waist was splattered throughout the lathe bed and backsplash. Not saying you don't know but can't hurt to mention it.

Re: lodge and shipley lathe
I saw that one, about made me loose my lunch, instant hamburger. I am trying to get the feed rates slower. Im using the slowest feed and the star nut and it still seems to feed incredibly fast its supposed to be 128 turns per inch. but the chips sure seem thick I dont know what you would ever use the faster rates for besides threading. The issue is Im not getting a smooth finish. tomorrow is another day and I will mess around some more with it.

Re: lodge and shipley lathe
What are you using HSS or carbide? A lot of brazed carbide tools have negative/neutral rake although I'd think your lathe has the *** to handle them. I look for "tan" chips as I'm not in production. I love HSS, you can't beat the cost.

Re: lodge and shipley lathe
I was trying out both, but the tool post holders hold the bits at such an angle that the carbides dont contact at the top edge unless the cutter is set way below centerline on the piece thats being cut.

Re: lodge and shipley lathe
Assuming you have a sharp cutting edge AND your cutting edge is centerline (not above or below), your feed and speed are incorrect. Make sure your lead screw is disengaged so as not to be "threading" your piece. What size piece of material are you trying to cut (diameter) and what is the material?
For carbide, a blue chip is okay as long as it is not dark blue. Your chip should be carrying away the heat from the work piece. Your sutting tool should not be hot at all. Rather, cool to the touch. Do you have any pictures of your tooling the way it is currently set up? Grant

Re: lodge and shipley lathe
Here is the tooling I have right now and how I have it set up. I dont know what kind a steel it is its an ancient cable tool drilling stem but the finest cuts this lathe can make according to the brass plates is 128 turns per inch thats like .008 a rotation thats using the star nut of course. just have to feed the gentle stuff by hand I guess
