Welding Helmet

I have an old welding helmet and I want to get a new one. I think I want an auto darkening and I was wondering if anybody knew what brand would be good I was thinking under a $100

A good auto for under $100?

HF periodically sells their "quality" hoods for about $60, but I'd guess that's as close as you'll get to your goal.

I'm not trying to be a wise-ask, but there really isn't a good hood in that range. The HF "quality" comment is sarcasm. About the cheapest auto hood I would use is the Hobart/Miller line, and I wouldn't use one for TIG, only MIG and Stick.

By the way, where in Michigan are you? There are a few of us Michiganders on here, and we occasionally get together around Lansing to work on projects together. I'm in the Jackson area myself.

Well you could go to a Tractor Supply store (or their web site) and order a Hobart "WELD-IT" brand self darkening one for about $80. Or you could go to Harbor Freight (Fright?) and get one of their Westen Safety models for about $59 (actually, they are down to $49 in their retail stores this week, if there's one near you).

The self darkening features work well in either. After all, they have to meet ANSI specs. But what you won't get is much comfort or robust construction. Nor will the rechargeable battery be accessible for replacement when it dies, so the helmet will be a throwaway. If you don't do a lot of continuous welding or only do hobby welding, they are fine. Otherwise, I'd put the money toward a Jackson or equivalent.

You only have one pair of eyes, don't skimp, buy quality. IO have a Speedglass 9000x and it is great. Look on ebay, you might find a deal.

Re: Welding Helmet

Keep your eye on craigslist. I just picked up a Jackson ESQ AD Journeyman Helmet for $26 and free shipping. I think I got it that cheap because the seller misspelled auto darkening (darkining). So it only showed up when I searched Jackson. Be patient and the right deal will come along.

I also saw a Miller Elite with a stripped out headgear knob going for $80
