Problems Here

Recently i bought a gassless mig, from CIG, it was a portaweld 100A, which ran off the GPO, the problem was, that the first one i got, i fired it up, did about 5 minutes of welding, and it died in the arse, the welder just stopped, so i went back, got a new one, and what would happen, was when i welded, i was welding on maybe 4-5mm plate, and it wouldnt even melt into the parent metal, it just sat on the surface, and look like a bunch of bird sh!t sitting on the metal.... and to this day i still dont know why it was doign that, i tried everything, i cleaned it, i changed gun angles, i changed everything i possibly could.

what i am wanting to know is what type of welder should i be getting, in regards to Amperage and power output, if i will only be welding up to 6-10mm plate. Im thinking around 150-170 amp, but then i think thats goign to require an electrician come out and put all sorts of cables all over the place... so what will i be looking for?

Re: Problems Here

I think to weld 10mm plate with a mig I'd want at least a 250 amp machine. You'll get one of these thats single phase. I think your single phase is the same as ours which is 240 volts. You may want to check your fuse or circuit breaker and if it isn't 20 amps or more check with a sparky to see if your wiring will handle this amount of draw. Goodluck.
