Re: dewalt cordless grinder
Based on my experience with cordless hand tools (mine are Dewalt), I would guess that a cordless grinder would disappoint someone who used it a lot to dress pieces prior to welding and grind the welds in between passes and for final cleanup. It probably would be OK for an occasional repair weld. Many people with docks, where the distance from the house causes too much voltage drop if they run an extension cord to the dock, end up buying a portable generator. Get a small, brand-name AC stick welder/generator combo for about $1100 - $1300 and you can weld and run all your corded hand tools off it.

Re: dewalt cordless grinder
thanks for the advise. my family owns a boat dock on cherokee lake. we have about 180 slips and the main dock stretches 200 yards plus another 100 yards of walkway. halfway down the voltage drop is major. we use cut off wheels all the time for various purposes. just thought it might be nice
thanks |

Re: dewalt cordless grinder
I was using one on Saturday - They work fine, but chew through the batteries really quickly.
Great for odd jobs, but no good for serious cutting. |

Re: dewalt cordless grinder
I got mine as a "free" tool after puchasing a 4 piece combo kit. The "cut off tool," as Dewalt calls it, did not come with batteries. It only came with the base unit.
My exp has been the battery life is way, way too short. I can maybe finish one small cut, 6 in.. So, for me, it was nice as a "freebie." I would never spend the cash for it.

Re: dewalt cordless grinder
I have found cordless grinders to be really handy for cutting metal "in the field" - it beats a hacksaw into a cocked hat!

Re: dewalt cordless grinder
I like my deWalt cordless grinder. As others said it cannot replace a corded version when you are in the shop, but it is very handy where no power is available. It does not wind up as fast as the corded version so the cut just takes longer. Just keep an extra battery on the charger.

Re: dewalt cordless grinder

http://www.ebay.com/itm/DEWALT-36V-C...item4cf9d23c78 $450 or so, not cheap, but wonder if battery life is better? |

Re: dewalt cordless grinder
You realize the original thread was from 06 right?
As far as cordless grinders AluminumWelder, depends greatly what you want to do with one. As a portable tool to cut a few bolts etc in the field they are excellent. But they will never take the place of a plug in unit either in power or light weight. I'll leave out battery life as it's pointless to match any battery tool to a corded on on run time.

Re: dewalt cordless grinder
Yes, you will go through batteries .My 18 volt grinder is great for that quick usage instead of running cords. I have all dewalt 18 volt tools and enough batteries to go around.
Amazon has specials on dewalt tools, spend $100 and get $25.00 off. |

Re: dewalt cordless grinder
The only thing mine is good for is cutting one chain on a full charge of battery after the job super locks the gate with me in there still welding.
Other than that the battery life sucks and its pretty much just useless
