Semester 1 week 3 GTAW carbon plate

this is my attempt at a cup walk. this is the third day that i have tried, somewhere around 9 hours practicing before this weld. everyone was really impressed in class. i figured i should share.. i know there are a few spots where the cup seemed to jump a bit, i will keep trying and hopefully i will get as good as some of the other guys on here.. thanks for looking..

Re: Semester 1 week 3 GTAW carbon plate

Looks OK..
You need to slow down more and tighten up the dips..

1/8"???

Get some 1/16" and you won't beat up the machine trying to weld with such big filler..

My machine will go to 460 amps and I don't even have any 1/8"...

Dragging the cup on the piece is CHEATING.
And you have major undercut on both sides of the weld..

...I call'em like I see'em...

...zap!

Re: Semester 1 week 3 GTAW carbon plate

Not bad for your time under the hood. To me you look a tad cold. Might be the way the lighting is on the picts. Also looking at the end of the weld shown, it looks like you are farther out on the bottom plate than the top. You want the legs to be about equal so you get roughly a 45 deg angle on the bead reinforcement. I agree you need to tighten up a bit.

everything you said is correct except for one thing, there is no undercut.. the photo has the illusion of undercut. but in person there is none. but the other stuff is correct. thanks, also my teacher makes me use the 1/8 filler

Re: Semester 1 week 3 GTAW carbon plate

No problem

My stuff looks like it has undercut also sometimes from the lighting..

I make who I teach use 1/16"

1/8" is OVERKILL for what you are doing and you can tell your teacher I said so.

...zap!

Re: Semester 1 week 3 GTAW carbon plate

Most jobs that require code tig are going to have a wps that specs wire and tung. sizes, so get used to using all normal sizes. Walking the cup is really only used on pipe, so dont get to excited about a flat plate fillet- not too many places are going to pay you to do that. When walking the cup you want to wash over the filler-dont dab like you would free hand, so a larger filler will change the profile of the bead and how it flows in to the toes. Over all it looks nice, but is kind of a waste of time. Grab some pipe if you want to walk the cup.

i just wanted to try this. its kind of premature of me really, i was just told to do t-joints, and so i figured i should try what looks cool to me. i am going to start back to dipping and getting my hands used to the motions. (without cupwalking.) this was just me trying to make something pretty. thanks for your comments. i cant wait to get to pipe work!

Re: Semester 1 week 3 GTAW carbon plate

today i ran a much more consistent and tighter weave. my teacher had me run one small cupwalk on 1/4" plate with 1/8 filler t joint, 150 amps to the floor, then cool, clean and weld another pass with 3/16 wire over the first weld. i almost have it looking perfect. i will post some more pics tomorrow. i am really liking the TIG process, starting to have second thoughts about doing pipeline work, maybe go into something TIG related!

I agree with Zap, i dont do alot of fillet welds with tig, but i do alot of out of position high pressure welding on pipe, both in the boiler and on boiler affiliated equipment, stainless, inconel, chromoly etc. First thing the pressure welder i apprenticed under years ago said before he was about to show me my first tig root was, son.... your going to be a great welder for this plant after were done with you, dont mess it up by walking the cup use your skills. I was taught to freehand pipe from day one, and its an invaluable skill i was able to acquire from these guys. Theirs so many situations where you absolutely cannot walk the cup due to confined space, then what? 712 xray'd welds in the plant to date, zero failures all freehand, actually as i type this message the xray tec is shooting another one of my welds!

Keep up the great work, focus on maybe freehanding if you can, requires way more skill. Zap's work is excellent and i can garuntee he doesnt walk the cup.

Re: Semester 1 week 3 GTAW carbon plate

im not an expert at all with tig'n pipe. IMO: freehand and walking-the-cup both have their place in a tig welders "toolbox" of skills. I was actually turned down from even testing out on a job because I couldn't walk the cup. I know, i know its absurd. Tig welders make x ray welds everyday freehand like you Pressure Welder. I also know, the guys usually in charge of finding qualified welders on jobs know next to nothing about welding. All they know is someone told them "find welders that walk the cup!" So that's what they do. If they see you doing something other than walking the cup, "sorry buddy, we need you to stop the test." There's no arguing with them. Freehand definately takes a steady hand. In the real world, you get a variety of fitters from good to not so good. Even the good fitters can only do so much if the stub on the compressor was cut so the joint is now 2 inches off the vessel. How are you going to walk the cup in the tight spot? You cant. You might be able to walk from 5 o clock to 12 o clock on the open side. There's nothing wrong with taking variables out if it means a cleaner looking weld. Resting the cup on the work piece is taking the shakiness from your hand out of the equation. After tig'n 10 -12 hours a day, I m looking for anything that can prop as much of my body up as possible ! haha! Learn as much as you can about as many processes as you can. We are living in very awkward times in this country right now. Be someone your boss can't do without ! just my 2 cents

i intend to and do practice freehand as well. i just love the way cupwalking looks. i will be great at both at some point. i can tell you know what you are talking about and i appreciate you spending your time helping me. i will be freehanding and cupwalking tomorrow in class! thanks again
