What size chain would you use?

I know there are different specifications for overhead lifting. Does this application need a specific chain or will one rated for the combined weight suffice?

Re: What size chain would you use?

Considering the amount of chain wrapped around each side, I doubt it really matters. The chains probably weighs more than the guy and the barrel combined. I guess they figured they needed a "safety" factor.

Timster2 - Discover the difference between grade 7,
and grade 8 chain, then refine your question. Opus

Wow. Anyone know where this was taken? I'm guessing somewhere in Central America.

Re: What size chain would you use?

I'd be more concerned about a "keeper" on that hook than I would be about chain size.

The picture was taken 1-19-12 in Belize, Central America, (Formally British Honduras) while on a Caribbean cruise. Went to a gift shop and this comedy was going on in the parking lot. You gotta thank OSHA and Unions for making this kind of lunacy almost extinct in the US.

Re: What size chain would you use?

It looks like there is the proper and required electrical isolation in effect...As far as falling out (of the barrel) we don't know if he has a rope around the chain and through a belt loop.

Re: What size chain would you use?

I AM NOT CONDONING THIS OR STATING IT'S SAFE!!!

That said, I use 55 gal drums for hauling scrap to the scrap yard all the time. I burn four triangles around the top sides, 12, 3, 6, & 9 o'clock. I use a chain just like they are doing in that pic. And I have lifted ALOT more weight than that guy weighs. He has probably done that and will keep doing that forever and never have a problem. Just sayin.....

Re: What size chain would you use?

That is classic. I had to pass this on to our small service truck crew. They primarily maintain our street lights. "PPE?" " No I just went before I got into the barrel."

Don't think the weight is the safety issue here.

This is what you get when you have people doing what they need to to get a job finished, and people are more concerned about eating than following some BS regulation.

Is what he is doing safe? You don't know. All you know is what has been drilled into your head.

Re: What size chain would you use?

I thought belize when I saw the picture. thats were we honeymooned.

there is something to be said about people with more balls than brains. And a few more choice words to be said about those with more brains than balls. You do what you gotta do to get the job done. And I'm willing to bet it took them less time to do it than the so called "safe" crews up here. because of all their safety checks and regulations.
