Re: recycled 100gal propane tank-BBQ-smoker

" feed 30-40 people ..."

Nah, maybe you can cook enough at a go to feed 30-40 polite dainty people, or maybe 10-12 hungry men.

Unless you're cooking whole briskets or other BIG chunks o' meat, and then maybe you're up to 20 hungry men at a time.

Neat project. Besides using a 100 gallon propane tank as the main object, what else did you use? How are the grates supported, just some tabs here and there? Do you have grates or a shelf inside the chamber to support the wood/coal, or is it just sitting on the inside of the tank? Are there multiple grate levels? Any flue/damper arrangement? Did you just use silver high-temp paint on the outside or something else?

And since this is WeldingWeb, where are the welds and how did you make them?

well it has over 10sq ft cooking area, I can cook up to 12 whole turkeys or 20-25 pork butts at once the food racks are supported by 1 1/2 angle iron, the fire racks are made out of 9/16hrss and 12ga 3/4 expanded metal the smoke stack on the right side is 8 1/2 ft tall and has a flue in it I welded it with my millermatic 210 and the paint is high temp paint

When I used to work for a pipe testing company welders often call us to come out with our pipe steamer to steam out tanks until no more combustable gases were detected. We'd steam truck fuel tanks for an hour or so. An 80 barrel tanker truck would have to be steamed all day.

Re: recycled 100gal propane tank-BBQ-smoker

Any idea whether the fumes given off by used tanks (or tanks of unknow metal type) are harmful?

Looks good.

We've used them for years. We always fire it up a few times before we actually put any food on it. Just in case.

Hey, you know I see BBQ's like this all the time, and I even have a set of plans to build one, but I can never seem to come across the tanks. Did you just stumble on this one, or what???
