Bad burn
I was helping a buddy out in detroit mi and I was not welding with much safty stuff because I thought he had more there then he did. So I was welding with no gloves not hat just a helmit. And he was welding next to me and I put my hand on a red hot electrode. It left a nasty (What looked like third degree burn). Now it is still pretty nasty but I was told to go to the doctors because of all of the stuff that is in the electrodes. I have full medical and every thing but I don't want to go if its just a burn. As of right now Im not going to go but does any one here have any reason that I sould go. Thanks

Re: Bad burn
I wouldn't go unless it starts to get infected or it doesn't appear to be healing after a reasonable period of time....

Re: Bad burn
Go to your local pharmacy and get some "Silvadine Cream"..
Yrs ago mrs zap tripped and fell arm first into a raging bonfire and that was the best thing for 3'Rd degree burns we've seen yet... She's fine now but she had to go to the hospital every morning for a month for burn "removal" therapy.. IT SUCKED!! ...zap!

Re: Bad burn
Are you sure the burn is third degree? See: http://health.allrefer.com/health/burns-info.html for (brief) descriptions of the burn types.
See also: http://www.hmc.psu.edu/healthinfo/b/burns3.htm for what to do about third degree. To cut it short: third degree: see a doctor. Fast. First degree: pain, redness, doesn't sffect the deeper layers second: deeper layer of skin affected, swelling, blistering third: gets to all layers of skin, and tissues underneath. May have numbing, charring, white or blackened skin Third degree means that the skin is dead. Nerves generally as well. The burn that doesn't swell or turn red, and loses feeling in the burned area, is third degree. But, you may not lose feeling. If you think it MIGHT be third degree, see a doctor. That said, I'v ignored several (small) third degree burns and healed fine, but I wouldn't reccommend it. |

Re: Bad burn
I said third degree because she basically fell into the fire..
came into the house.. I grabbed her by the arm..Not knowing what happend.. And all that burnt flesh came off in my hand..ALOT of it.. 911 and then an ambulance ride... And the doctors stated that all that flesh coming off that fast was the best thing that could have happend.. to this day you really have to look to see any scaring.. and this was from the elbow to the pinkey fingrer... Been there Dealt with that.. ...zap!

Re: Bad burn
Sorry not clear: I was asking deadman about the burn.
I never had to deal with a large area third degree. I don't want to. I saw enough pictures years ago when I worked in a lab across the street from the Dana Farber center. |

Re: Bad burn
I have tons on burn scars on my arms. Yes I wear my gear, but as I'm sure everyone knows.... if there is a place to get burned the sparks are going to find it. Anyway.... once I ended up in the hospital for 1 week and home on my couch with an IV for another 2 weeks, due to a staff infection brought on by a burn I sustained on the top of my foot. So as much as I don't worry about burns or seek medical treatment for them, I do take care of them.

Re: Bad burn
If you have full medical, why not just go in just in case?
I once got scladed up and down my arm by a radiator cap exploding. My doctor scolded me for waiting more than 24 hours. |

Re: Bad burn
Grabbing a hot welding rod hurts like hell, I done it years ago and it burned a nice 3/16" dia. hole between my fingers.
I think I even made up a few words.

Re: Bad burn
Yea from every thing that ive seen and heard it is third degree. My sister's boyfrend is a doctor in training so It was my first third degree burn and his to treat. Its healing decent but looks like its going to leave a heck of a scar. But its right before the knuckles on the palm side of my hand so it won't be seen. I'm not old enough to drink (But I do anyway). So I might have to stay with a six pack or what ever my sister will buy me.

Re: Bad burn
Third degree burns actually are not that bad in the pain department. You kill most of the nerves in the process. The real pain I felt was when they did a skin graft. They put me under then peeled off a section on the top of my thigh. It felt like the devil himself had given me a sunburn on my leg. That salvaged skin was then used to graft over my burn.
The graft was the greatest motivation I ever had for not getting another bad burn. They locked me in the hospital for six weeks. It was like being in jail. Risk of infection was the big concern. |
