Model? Approximate age? Style (transformer? Motor-generator?)? Pictures? How far from the panel?

First place to look is the nameplate. That sould give input voltage options and corresponding current draw, which is how the wireing and breaker/fuseing will be sized. Often tells you the proper jumpering for possible hookups as well.
