gage distances on structural
Gage distance on angles is from the heel to the hole center. I know that for sure.
As for beams I have always thought it was center to center hole distance across the beam flange. Every print I have encountered has used this convention. I discovered a print reading text that stated gage was from web centerline to hole. I so far consider this a misprint. Anyone else ran into this conflict??? |

Re: gage distances on structural
Only way I have ever seen it is as you described, center to center of the holes, centered on the flange. How many wf have you seen where the web is centered perfectly on the flanges? Not many I'd bet---

c to c ga unless only one hole then centre line of beam to hole

If the gauge given is four inches does that mean the single hole is to be four inches from centerline??? This was a school exercise so the complete beam dimensions were not included. I read it as two inches away from centerline while others saw it as four inches from centerline. Until someone corrects me I will take gage distance as between hole centers whether it is one hole or two holes. |

Re: gage distances on structural
Gage of a beam is measured from the C/L of the web to the holes equally on each side on the flange. If the gage is given as N/S or F/S only, divide the gage by 2 and go from the C/L of the web that distance. Example: If the gage is 3 1/2", the holes would be 1 3/4" from C/L of the web. If the gage callout is 3 1/2", N/S, or F/S only, the hole would be 1 3/4" to the side where it is called out.
Gage of a channel is measured from the heel. The heel is also considered the C/L of a channel for dimensioning purposes. Angle is also measured from the heel. |
