Pick up this SA200 today. Had success getting a blackface back into spec, so I want to do a full monty redface refurb.

Per Stumpf its a 1969 and should have a red face plate. It has a round generator. I always read that SA200 that have copper coils have the high mounted starter. This starter is mounted low. Does it have the copper coils?

Second, any tips or warnings before I just take out and apart engine before taking to a machine shop. I don't have the tools and knowledge to determine the if the engine needs to be rebuilt or to what extent.

Apologize for the sideways pics, but that is how they uploaded.

It's a Redface internally, just has a black faceplate. I have a 69' blackface as well.

Stumpfs has the correct black faceplate if you want to replace it. Or you could slap a red one on it just the same.

And read through some of the past threads here about engine / generator separation. There's only one right way to do it. :)

The face plate appears to be black, but Stumpf has red plate as replacement for code. Unless I am reading it wrong. Glad to hear its internally a redface. Have not gotten around to ohming out the coils to test. I would have search the forum to get correct copper ohms.

There is youtube from BW parts on separating the engine from generator https://youtu.be/DMFCacoxbZw

That's one way to do it. Allows leaving all the generator wiring in place. I just happen to prefer working from the other end as I usually address other issues in the process.

Used the BW Parts method. When you lift the engine and have generator supported, you have to find the spot that the engine floats without up or down pressure. Use crowbars and really big screwdrivers, and don't be shy. It just barely comes out.

Have a block in the shop out of a '69 that I had to press the pistons out with a 20T press. One cylinder has a 1/16"+ deep groove around its bore where the top ring was. All cylinders would need sleeves and all intake valve seat areas a so pitted they'd have to have to be cut for inserts. Block isn't worth the machine work that would be required to make it usable.
