few pics of projects me and kids have done.
first are of frame me and my 5yr old boy are building. frame is made from old blowpin shafts from machine we refurbed at work.
he even did some of welding with daddy holding his hand.
hoping to fnish it this week during my 4 days off.
its upside down in pic is frame as jst been painted.
second is chopper my eldest boy is building himself, dads just helping with holding things in place while he tacks them. forks were extended using landrover steering tubes.
third is trike for my eldest girl to take her gear when she goes kick boxing.
fourth is recumbant trike i built for me then stripped to use bits on daughters.
Awesome bikes!!
linkage is interesting

My recently purchased bikes nothing like what your making, but still fairly nice bikes.
1983 Nishiki Custom Sport (chromoly lugged)
2011 Fuji Crosstown 1.0 (aluminum)
Brazin, what the heck have you got going on there?
Zank, what are you using to clean the flux up after?
I have a soak tub with a water heater. The water has some OX-OUT 532 added to keep the steel from flash rusting after soaking. I change out the water every 30 or 40 bikes. Works great. I heat up the water to about 150F, and that takes care of silver or bronze flux pretty quickly.

Shameless cross post, but i thought you would like these, guys.

Ha, well it's a "Long John" I made out of a mountain bike and some .035" wall square tubing, the rib cage is recycled slat wall clothing display bars, oh and an upside down ladies bike added to the rear section to provide the steering. V-brakes and 16 speeds, all for about $20. gave it to a family, dad rides the two kids and a sax around in a box he put on it.![]()

OK, Rideit, I gotta ask where you found those clock mech's? All we've found around here is those wimpy "AA" powered ones and they certainly wouldn't keep time adding anything "heavy" like a spoke nipple attached to them. We'd like to make our own hands but just can't find the mech's to take heavier arms.
Thanks very much in advance!!!!!!!!

I would be interested in how you align the front and back axles. I assume some type of jig. Reason I ask is a friend and me are considering converting an Worksman bike with an antique motor in hopes of achieving an antique "look-alike" early 1900s motorcycle...something like you find in antique motorcycle mag. BTW, nice TIG welds

Bert, order the 'hi torque' versions from clockit.com, they will handle those loads easily. Keep in mind, those are aluminum nipples, cut in 1/2. Weighs virtually nothing.

Haven't built any from scratch, but have saved a couple from the scrap pile:
My brother gave me a Trek 7000 aluminum frame back in '09 that had the rear derailleur hanger busted. I didn't have a TIG capable of doing aluminum back then, so I had a former co-worker's brother weld it for me. A little filing and helicoiling and it was back in business. I ended up stripping off all the paint/powdercoat (probably powdercoat - it was a real PITA to blast off). Built it back into a complete bike and been riding it bare since then. I may powdercoat it some day...
My little one's first bike was a dumpster find (missing one of the training wheels). I made a new training wheel out of nylon and powdercoated the training wheel arms and chain guard in Eastwood Rally Wheel Charcoal (they were the kind of dinged up / rusty). Got some good use out of it and was getting ready to coat the fork and bars, but ended up buying a bigger bike as a birthday present. Got another on the way, so I'll have to finish it up by the time they're big enough to ride. Will probably do the fork and bars in the same charcoal color and was thinking off-white for the frame (I have a powder called candlestick) for a two-tone look. If I get ambitious, I might cast up some matching aluminum training wheels.![]()
Here's a pic of the hanger before repair.
Ok so maybe this question is answered some where here in this thread but my adhd wont let me read everything in one sitting(or even three or four sittings). What is the reason for soldering bike fittings instead of welding? Is it as strong or stronger? Or is it faster and cheaper? How do you guy design your bikes is there formulas for figuring out the size to make?
