    Leaf Spring Uses?

Anybody know what I can make out of some old leaf spring steel. I hate to let it go to the scrap yard, but not sure what it would be good for.

I understand they are good for knife blades. I had one for years I was going to try that with but don't know where it ended up.

You can make forging or smithing tools out of them. They make excellent pritchels (punches).

I had a customer that brought me some truck springs to make him some auger teeth for his post hole digger. He swore by them, I thought they cut, drilled, and ground too easy to last in our rocks in this area.

If you have a garden tractor and a garden, you can make a set of harrow teeth out of them, or a new pair of shoes for a snow blower or snow blade.
in olden times, they made a good working adz out of spring steel, chisels, scrapers, knifes, the list goes on!

Always made pipe wedges out of them. Had an instructor that made skinning knives out of them.

cut a notch in a 1 1/2 " to 2" pipe and then fit the leaf spring in it and weld it. you'll have a cheap/strong prybar.

I saw some thick ones made into boat anchors. The guy made a triangle with a short one on the bottom like a rocker of a rocking chair...Bob

I'll bet they'd be good for cutting scrap tires...
Because a broken leaf will sure cut a sidewall open when it walks sideways.

I believe it is high carbon/chromium 5160 HA spring steel.

Back in the day we used to make wood lathe tools out of them, gouges, scrapers, skews and such. They weren't nearly as hard as HSS tool steel but they worked well and were easily sharpened do the high Carbon content.

The material can be used for scrapers and other cleaning tools to remove spatter and slag hanging on the bottom of a bad cut.

How about a Helve hammer? You work with sheet metal?
