Once I realized how old it was I changed my plan for it. Now I need to make up some old looking ironwork or riveted beam so it matches. Kind of like the ones below.

I wonder what the value on an old tank like that would be. There can't be many tanks surviving from that period and I'm sure there's a collector out there with deep pockets. Find the guy that collects old shop equipment, and that just might be the $1000 piece he needs to finish off his display!

No way I could cut it up!

Very cool thread, thanks all for sharing. Some great creativity here.

Here is one of mine from a few years back. Haven't made some in a while but they are fun to do.

A project for my real job.
I had to remove the top of the compartment on the left and make it look like the one on the right.

Do you do anything extra to seal the rivets and are they aluminum/stainless or self sealing ?

I had the worst time with some of the aluminum/stainless rivets leaking on some lids I built.

No rivets this time. They had used stainless bolts on the first lid and I was able to re-use those. There was a bit of oxidation and sticking from the dissimilar metals but I was able to get the original bolts out. Since this truck is a bit of garage queen, they are not that worried about sealing it.

Do you use something like Sculpt Nouveau for the various colors on your pieces or is it usually just the natural color of the metal?

Thank you. I have used a dry brush technique before so I will have to try it out.

Charlie Brown has nothing on us. Our tree is up and we are ready for a redneck Christmas.
This is for a Christmas sale event this weekend.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

I made a few air distribution manifold boxes for surface supplied diving. These take air from one source and split it out to three points.
I made the original ones out of aluminum sheet a few years ago but they were unpainted and began to corrode. The first pic shows the conditions of the old pieces. This deterioration was partly due to the environment, design, poor maintenance from the users, and partly due to the dissimilar metals (AL and SS) touching each other.
These were made from aluminum as well and painted. Additionally, I used a type of synthetic lube between the metal contact points so hopefully these will last a bit longer. If not, I guess its job security and I rebuild them again in 5 years or so.

Looks Good Pat. I've been commissioned to make a Christmas Wreath door hanger. I found a style I like at Joann's the other day so I think I may try my hand at making one just like it.
