    Welding 6061 to 6063

Quick question from the group here... btw I did try to search but probably didn't type the correct question.

I am going to build a several signs made from 1-1/4" x 1/8" sq tube that will be 22' long. In the past I splice 6061 tube together to get the length but I am thinking about using 6063 for the long pieces and 6061 for the shorter ones. The processes used will be pulse mig with 4043 filler and tig with 5356. My brain tells me that there is no problem welding the two alloys together but I haven't done that in the past so I'm asking if there is anything I should avoid here? The parts will not be anodized so I'm not concerned about that.

    Thanks everyone

No problem at all. Welding the two is done quite regularly.

I did it for a boarding ladder for a boat. Either the flats or the tube was 6061, the other was 6063. I used 5356. Has lasted fine with a 350 lb guy going up and down it every day on his live aboard. I am not a welder or metalurgist. Just a hack with a boat shop...

Have you checked on 24' lengths? They are common as dirt over here.

Are you getting 6061 in 24'?
My supplier has 6061 only in 20' but 6063 comes 24'.

I definitely have bought 24' lengths of 3/4 square, 1" square and 1 1/2" square in 6061 in the last year or so. I couldn't find the last time I bought 1 1/4, to see if they were also 6061.

From one distributor, 6061 square is primarily 24' sticks, and 6063 square is usually 21' 1".
From another, they primarily stock 24' sticks of both alloys, but have a more limited selection of 6061 square tube. A true 20' is actually a rarity in square tube for me.
