    better late than never

I'm about to turn 40, and a couple years ago I read an article in Make magazine about welding. I grew up in the country and my friends took shop, and my dad had a nice o/a rig he used to make a amateur racecar frame before I was born, but somehow I never had done any welding before. I got an everlast lunchbox (the 140 I think) and started playing with 6011,6013, and 7018. A friend then gave me a B size o/a rig that I've been trying to weld 16ga tubing with. I'm really enjoying it all and wanted to start asking some questions. I'm more experimenter than hobbyist. The only thing I've made so far is a sliding barn door for the pantry. But I cut angle and strip and do (mostly horizontal so far) test welds with different sticks and the o/a and then use vice clamps to destructively test them and see what I did wrong. I've done some 16ga tubing as well with both o/a and the 6011. My O/A welds are currently too brittle, but not porous, I'm guessing I need to work on my flame adjustment, or maybe move a little faster with a larger tip. When I get better with the o/a on mild steel I want to get some of the videos from TM tech and start trying aluminum. Once I get ok with that I'll get an argon bottle and start playing with some stainless tig. Then maybe a wirefeed? I dunno its going to take a long time to get past alumium o/a I suspect. Enjoying the hobby, glad there is a forum like this.
