How is smith with warranty work?

I have many smith torches and a few of my SC209 torches have a sticky oxygen handle. Everything is lifetime warranty, but I've never had to use it before. I'm thinking of having those serviced/replaced (whatever they do) and was curious what others experience was that have had warranty work. How do they do it, what do they do?

Maybe worth noting, 1 mixer and 2 of the 209's are SMITHS, so older models. The rest are SMITH.

I've always had Smith's torches since I was a boy. Only warranty work I had done was on my then new SC209 series head and it was done at the welding supplier. With Smith now owned by ITW, I'm afraid I really don't have any idea how it would be handled. It cannot hurt to ask a sales store whom handles the brand.

Re: How is smith with warranty work?

I can recall 1 warranty repair to a Smith cutting head in my life.
I handed the 209 across the counter to Ted who had sold it to me, he walked it to the back room and brought it back 5 minutes later fixed and with new O rings. He'd even run it over the wire wheel and cleaned most of the carbon off.
No Charge, Warranty, anything else I can do for you today.

Since ebay and the ITW takeover I notice far less Smith and ITW Blue product in stock at the store now run by Ted's son. Regulator repair work that was done in house now gets shipped out due to insurance cost. It's an open secret ITW screwed the dealers who built the Miller brand name. My hunch is the same has or will happen with Smith.

"sticky oxy handle" might just be a dried out packing you can cure by cleaning up the stem, or it might be worse.
Exploded diagram of the torch is here
    https://www.regulatortorchrepair.com/smith-sc209

If you attempt repair yourself make sure you submarine the torch in water or give it a good bath of bubble soap with gas turned on before using it.

Regulatorandtorch has all the parts, and the company owner is honest as well as reasonable. He can tell you real quick what ITW is doing. My best guess is ITW will claim your issue is a wear part issue and they will bleed you for repairs.

Regulatorandtorch rebuilds the cutter for $65-

Regulator and torch repair is likely where it will go for Smith warranty repair.
Make sure it has a Smith stamped tip in it when you take it in.

Thanks for the replies. I do run smith tips. I tried to send them a message through the contact form on the smith site and the form had errors when submitted. I'll stop by Airgas tomorrow and see what help they offer. They are the only smith dealer locally. I have 1 sticky oxygen handle valve, and another with faulty orings in the tip.

Speaking of tips........ One of my Sc209 is new and it doesn't have the oring in the end where the tip goes anymore. No place for it. Since mine is worn out and needs replaced, I guess they decided they didn't need it there. Interesting for people who use these. They made a silent change and didn't tell anyone. I don't plan on taking the whole torch in, just the 209 so I am not leaving any tips in it. I fixed my sticky oxy handle today. Found out the front of the handle was pinching in the cradle so I just shaved 1mm off the handle. It is still going in though.... 2 of my 5 cutting heads need orings in the tip.

Side note: Anyone ever seen these regulators? They are nowhere on a google search. .......should be medium duty. Question is more what age they are.

These are the old sc209 with the oring in the tip.

And these are the new ones. No place for it. Just a smooth wall.

Re: How is smith with warranty work?

Cutting tips for the 209 head have a single graphite seal semiaffixed to the tip, no O rings. I believe the 500 uses a similar seating system.
If the graphite isn't fully seated acetylene will leak out of the nut and light.

The 3 O rings on the SC 209 where it indexes into the handle are available from Regulatorandtorch for around 60˘ each. Their part number is S-007.

I'm speaking of the built in oring seen above in the 209 head. Present in all older 209's, not in any new ones. It was seated between the acetylene and oxygen preheat stages. All 4 of my older 209's have the oring.

Re: How is smith with warranty work?

I've run Smith 200 series torches over 45 years and have no recall of O rings either on the tip or inside the head where the tip indexes.
Exploded for the tip doesn't show it.
    https://www.regulatortorchrepair.com...12-cutting-tip

Exploded for the 209 head doesn't show it either
    https://www.regulatortorchrepair.com/smith-sc209

I do recall Purox used 2 different size O rings to seal the tip into the head, but I don't recall any in Smith. S,ith uses a friction fit which can be fun to disassemble when the torch is hot.

    Are you sure it's a 209?

There are 3 or 4 cutters in the 200 series

I own at least 4 and I'll look Monday

My 209 was new in 1975 and I'll look shortly when I'm at the shop to see if it has the "O" ring.

Checked 4 209s and 1 20? and none have what appears to be an O ring seat as yours shows. Also checked the 500 - no O ring seat.

I'm thinking yours may be older than any I have.

John, Smith no longer handles Lifetime Warranty repairs in house. There are two repair facilities in the US and Regulator and Torch Repair is the facility in the eastern half of the country.
