    Welding Magnet Demagnetized??

Ok so I stepped on the cheap sheet metal ground clamp that came with my machine and it broke. So I took apart an old HDD, salvaged the magnet from that and used that as a magnet as a diy mag. ground clamp. After 15min of welding, the magnet is barely sticking to metal, UPDATE (it's been now completely Demagnetized) when I pulled it out of the HDD it could like 10lbs. Did the electricity or the heat mess it up, how's that possible. If so, I'd imagine the store bought mag clamps will fail after a while like mine. Lol??

    Memo: Heat destroys magnetic fields.

Might by why blacksmiths often use a magnet to determine when their heat is at correct temperature.

Dropping a magnet will weaken it as well. Did it get hot because the ground was close to your welding or because the surface was dirty and a poor connection? I've had a cheap commercial one on my handle for about a year with no problems, but I actually use it more to hang the clamp on the side of my bench when I'm not using it than as a ground.

Your imagination would be wrong. I've had mine for years. a few actually.

Hard drive magnets are rare earth.... rare earth magnets can only handle so much heat...

And passing heavy currents directly though them is probably worse than direct heat as the 'skin' of the magnet is much a better conductor than the innards.

I was thinking that you might be welding with AC, which could confuse the magic elves in the magnet and end up degaussing it.

Yeah I got confused b/c as the magnet died the rod didn’t arc, the magnet did, I was like WTF is that.

So now all you got to do is get a good powerful straight polarity electromagnet(used MRI machine...) then heat the dead magnet up past curie temp and remagnetize it

If you want a real fun show try cutting a ceramic magnet or even carbide cutter with the plasma machine.

I've only seen that once in a video. That was enough of an education to not try it myself.

Always used a diamond wheel myself, ($$$).
