Best option for shelves under tab and slot table

    What’s up guys.

I have a 4’x3’ tab and slob table which i love but need to better utilize the space it occupies.

I want to add 3 shelves to it mostly for storing sheet metal/plate on.

    The span is 33” x 44”.

    Deciding between
11 or 12 gauge for the shelves. I think 14 gauge is gonna be floppy without a center support?

I could do expanded metal but i hate having to hide the edge/cover it up. Also probably too floppy without a center support?

Im reluctant to go with the 1/8” plate just because of the cost at around $85 per shelf.

I can’t post a pic from my phone but it’s jusf a square tube frame. I am going to frame the perimeter with two more levels of 1.5” tube and drop the shelves on top of those tacked in place.

    Here’s two of my tables.

First pic 1/2 plywood balance expanded metal for shelf.

Second pic. Retail shelving sections “massaged” to fit.

The slide-out shelves look like a good idea.

Use the expanded metal and add flat bar on edge or inverted vee with angle iron for center support.
Build an angle iron frame as shelf supports and leave your expanded metal sheet recessed in it to make for a nice finished look.

As Lisa2323 stated, I would use " FLATTENED '' expanded metal . Nice clean look and sliding sheets in works well. Depending on your supplier , it's avaiable in a variety of openings and thicknesses. This should help some.

What’s the best way to clean up the edge though?

In the past I’ve put it undernead or inside angle iron so it’s hidden, in this case I’m using tubing. I suppose i could use angle as well for the shelves however and insert from underneath.

Plug weld angle iron on the insides of your square tube to support your expanded metal shelf.

You can even get perforated. I bought a sheet and used a piece for the bottom shelf of this welding cart.

Check with supplier, they sell a "U" shape piece that slides over the cut edge so covers top and bottom. It slides on about one inch and provides a clean look. You could use flat stock and drill holes and plug weld like Lisa2323 said.

Keep in mind that anything you store under the tab-n-slot table is going to be constantly showered with slag, dross, chips and dust. A perforated shelf of any kind will help transport the debris to ground level but its still going to lay on your stored material. I added a chip tray to mine which is basically a slide out shelf pretty much flush to the bottom of the table assembly. With that i get no debris and so i can now cleanly store a tool chest, all my metal squares, clamps and small material drops for later use. The manufacturer ought to make this type of tray a factory option since many people want to use the otherwise unused space underneath for storage. Eventually i may move my TIG welder under there for ease of access around the table.

I actually use the table for grinding mostly.

I am putting a top solid piece to spare the stuff underneath but it’s just storing scrap it can get dusty.

I am going to go with the 1/8” solid shelves, when you factor in the cost of angle iron and the effort of extra cutting and welding all around it’s not worth doing the expanded metal.

Do you guys think 1.5” x 1.5” by 1/8” angle is strong enough for the 44” span or should i really use tubing? It would save me around $100 to use angle.

That angle should be plenty strong at that span. 1" or 1.25" would be enough on a short span like that.

Ordered the 11 gauge plate and 40 feet of angle. $250

Cant put a price on storage space though...
