    Aluminum flag pole?

So last night in the wind my flag pole blew over and I would like to weld it back together. So my question, is there a easy way to determine it's alloy content for weldability? Multimatic 200 spoolgun.
I do not know the make or model of the pole it was here when we bought the house 5 years ago. It's one of those telescopic deals. Thanks, I have a feeling it's going to be a hail Mary pass.

I think your best bet would be to cut if off and find either an internal or external sleeve. Those poles are typically on the thin side and fairly difficult to do a mig butt weld.

Yup, I’d sleeve it. A foot piece would be plenty if you can get that much inside. Outside wouldn’t look as good I would think.

You can weld it with 4043 .035 wire in your spool gun with at least some kind of backing strip to eat some of the heat. I also strongly recommend a sleeve on the inside about a foot long 1/8" wall or so (this will add alot of rigidity) cut the broken ends off square and put 1/4"-3/8" gap. Do one quick weld around. Do a test weld and adjust as needed. I haven't had to use a spool gun in some time.

Identifying the type of aluminium and selecting the correct filler can sometimes be difficult. I would rather TIG weld it.
Sheet and plate are usually 5000 series where 5356 filler is often used.
A pole however is extruded so i'd bet that its a 6000 series aluminium which is trickier to weld.
I would try 4035 filler wire and make sure u use pure argon. I would use short bursts of the MIG instead of trying to go around it in 1 pass.
    Good luck

Seems like you would need a machined sleeve to make that work

I would tend to agree, as flagpoles have a slight taper to them. A straight piece of pipe or tubing isn't going to fit tight on one end or the other. How far from the bottom was the break?

I've been everywhere but the electric chair, seen everything but the wind...the only two things I can't weld is the crack of dawn and a broken heart!

My wife ordered a new pole (flagpole that is) so no welding but once I get the new one I should have some stock to practice on and it is 16ga.

That shows her confidence in your welding ability to fix the broken flag pole . But like you say, you now will have some more material to play with.

Not just hers, I maybe have an hour of arc time welding aluminum in my life and that includes mig tig and stick mostly from high school shop class. About a month into she and I dating she wanted a pot rack for the kitchen. So I'm thinking cool I get to play with the torch and drink beer in the shop, oh no. She wanted to make it and have me set the torch for her and do all the layout. I knew I had a keeper.

16g is right at the edge for migging aluminum. You'll have some fun learning on 16g.
