I don't think you need to go as heavy as 1/4'' wall tube, I would use 3''x 1/8'' wall but I would probably add more supports across the top to keep the base of the tank from sagging into those openings.

The largest fish tank I ever had was 140 gallons for salt water. A 1000 gallons is roughly 8,000 lbs of just water. Add the weight of the tank, lights, filters, etc and you're close to 5 tons.

You need to find out what the bottom looks like. I assume it's all glass or plastic.

Questions : how thick is the material? Do the sides rest on top of the bottom (probable) or is the bottom an insert into the sides (not likely)?

Add a cushion between the tank and the steel to accommodate minor warping in the steel or a tank that's not perfect. A 1/2" - 1" of rubber over the steel so the tank never touches the steel. Consider a truss for the top 12-18 inches of the frame with the bottom of the truss on lots of verticals.

If it's for salt water, with frequent water changes, consider some mechanism to limit water to steel contact. The stand should accommodate quite a bit of filtration equipment such as Bio-balls, etc. Have plenty of electrical outlets under the tank.
    To my knowledge, I own:
50% of all the plasma cutters,
33% of all the TIG welders and
20% of all the MIG welders on the island.

    I own 1 of each.

your choice of materials should be more than adequate. the end user should make sure the floor is supported along it's full length or there's going to be problems that might be blamed on you. that's a lot of weight.

    Water is 8 lbs/gal, therefore 1000 gal = 8,000 lbs, not 800.

For those dimensions and load, to support a tank, i would tell him to get it designed by an engineer and you will build it according to the design. You need enough to support the load with a safety factor built in.

Even home hot-water tank installs have earthquake parameters.

The floor support does matter too. I wouldn't assume anything.

Could this tank be in a seismic zone? Any shaking could collapse an improperly designed base due to shear loads.
The recommendation to have a structural engineer design the base is worth considering.

I aint no engineer or professional welder, but water moves and has different loading than a solid 10 ton load...your design looks to have little side to side structural support, as a guess I would be putting lots of gussets to hold it together, better yet have a engineer design it...and if you add in an earthquake zone.....

Re: 1000 gal fish tank stand advice

The original post shows a facsimile of what needs to be built. I think people are not noticing the width of the proposed tank - 6.5 feet.

The number of verticals to support a 9.5' x 6.5' structure holding somewhere near 5 tons is going to be high. The bottom needs lots of support as it is subject to the greatest load. I assume a cast acrylic tank and that bottom needs lots of support to keep it from deforming over time.

Candidly, I think the tank needs to be on reinforced concrete slab on concrete piers, not on steel.

the local pet shop has several thousand gallon salt water tanks and the supporting stands are built from 4x4's with 2x4 diagonals. the floor which is wet every time i go there is supported god knows how. if they were smart there would be screw jacks underneath just to be on the safe side.

For perspective, the weight is approximately the equivalent of 2 Chevy Suburban's stacked on 1/2 the length of a normal Suburban chassis.

So the advice to consult an engineer seems wise.

Based on experience with salt water tanks, gonna need to powder coat the frame, or make sure it has a REALLY good paint job. No matter how careful you are, how well you try to avoid it, even a small amount of misting, drippage, etc will probably occur..... the salt will mess with the steel frame.

Strength is one thing, stiffness or rigidity is another. That top surface has to remain flat no matter what if there's a glass tank on top. Rectangular tube might be a better choice for the horizontal members, rather than square. Less metal but put in the right place, so to speak.

    Questions I have are
1)How close to perfectly flat does it have to be
    2) How close to perfectly flat is the floor
    3) Do any cushion go between frame and tank

This simple frame job is becoming more expensive by the minute, anyone capable of fabricating an aquarium that size should have his requirements specked out for the fabricator.

2” 1/8 wall is good I’d think. I’d get some supports in the middle since it’s pretty wide. The pic has no middle supports
