    250 bobcat hard to start

Got a 250 bobcat with kohler engine, after setting for about a week the engine will not start. Gas drains out of fuel line back in the tank and pump , have to pour gas in carb to start it. Anyone have a fix for this, replaced pump and fuel lines. Thanks

The gas can't siphon out of the carb, at least not out of all the carbs I've dealt with. Some of the EPA mandated chokes now won't let the engine draw gas out of the float chamber. Make certain the choke is closing all the way.

Check the fuel cap, there is a little rubber check valve on the bottom side, It may be sticking shut and pulling gas back to the tank, it will also make the tank pressurize and force gas past the pump and float needle. On my trailblazers I ripped it out with pliers so it could vent properly. No more flooding in hot weather. I'm not positive that's your problem but it's worth a try.

    My bobcat 225nt does similar.

It'll start right up the next day, but let it sit and it'll take at least 15 seconds of cranking to start.

A shot of starter fluid fires it right off.

Have used a marine bulb primer pump to prevent this condition. Just pump her up before you are ready to use your machine.

I've considered doing that - likely works excellent

It does work great and helps save the starter. It only took me about 15 yrs of use to figure this out.

My 250 (kohler) carb is a poor cold weather starter. Cranks for quite a while before firing if it sits for a length of time. It does and will start, just takes some cranking.
This time of the year (summer) it starts fine with much less cranking after sitting.
This is a motor/welder combo that greatly benefits from Efi.

I’ve got a bobcat 225 with a Mitsubishi engine that is very hard to start. I’m going to loosen the gas cap and try to start it.
Very low hour unit and it’s always been hard to start.

one thing i always do on all my small engines is to choke the engine when it almost shut off. this way, it has choked air in the cylinder and in the intake for next cold start-up and choke lever is in the correct position!

Re: 250 bobcat hard to start

I'm no expert with small engines but it seems to me that if it has the fuel shut off solenoid the only way for gas to drain back is for the solenoid plunger to not be seating/sealing or for there to be a leak in the fuel system. Since you've replaced the lines and pump (and filter?) I'd look at the solenoid and maybe crack the carb open to look for snot balls (a professional term...) or cracked o-rings.

But I like the primer bulb idea, too. I like it a lot as my Ranger and Makita generator often sit for quite a while without the loose nut in front of the control panel giving them any attention. The Makita has a Robin/Subaru engine that has a fuel shut off and starts very easily after a few tugs of the rope but now I may put a priming bulb on it , too.
