Good job on the improvised bending, and nice jeep. I'd add some tube - square or round - around the perimeter tied into the bumper and running board to fill it out a bit and withstand the "fat guy test" (can a fat guy stand on it?).

    Thanks.

Kinda winging all this. Cant drive this thing in winter over2mph. Then windshield gets coverd.

Not sure what I'm going to do.
Bumper will be wrapped around the corner. Will have some kind of stiffer through the fender.

I cut about 2" more sheet metal to do this. Rear will be about the same but harder because I have to some how bend to the door line.Name: 20190817_210726.jpg

I think itl pass the fat guy test but will need some help to pass the rock and tree test

Hell, I never thought of using heat to bend those. I need stouter fenders for a trailer, and just assumed that I would have to have it done on a brake.

Heating is a good way to also get more capacity out of a "cold bender", be it press, brake, or hossfeld type etc.

I was just checking out the rear door lines on the XJ, looks like it will be a challenge. If you don't have tube for the larger radius bends weights are something that most people have or have access to that can be used a jig to bend around.

    Looks good so far!

I'm getting ready to do a set of fenders for my '94 YJ, although I will probably be using 1/8"...I know its a lot easier to bend. Still not sure what size tubing to use, but I do have a couple of pan brakes and a SWAG offroad bender to use.

Re: Attempting some XJ fenders out of 1/4"

I would size the tubing based on how much "action" the fender is going to see. If it's just a grocery getter I'd suggest .5 - 1 inch 18g or greater, light trail machine I'd do 1-1.25inch 14g or greater, and for real rock crawling type stuff 1.5" and .120" or greater. Remember sometimes you want that fender or bumper to give to save the chassis metal work from getting torn up! On that note also remember the fender will only be as strong as what you attach it to, no sense going crazy on a fender that is just riveted to the body.

My dies a 5.5clr die. But 1 3/4 tube will eat up my fender space. In the rear. I got some 1/8" for the rear just incase.
The didnt have 1 3/4 .120 tube in stock. I'll have to order it out of Utah.
    My minds cranking now.

Its trail only sits in the driveway mostly.

My fenders aren't attached to sheet metal fenders at all. The sliders are 2x8x3/16 welded into the body

Picked up a stick of 2x2x .25 to build long arms for front need to plate length of unibody first in preparation for long arm mounting points.

There is a local guy here that does tube bending, small cnc, and brake/press/rolling type stuff for a great price out of his home garage. He advertises through offerup, craigslist, FB marketplace, those kinds of things. Might be another option if you can find something similar in your area. I'm not sure how well he does but it's a great deal for the consumer! A friend got gussets with his initials cut out and some tube bent for bumper and fender mods.

Theres a guy around the corner that might have smaller dies. Hes mechanic that's big into building offroad rigs.
I might break down and get a 1 1/4 dies one of these days. I think 1" is just to small for what I want to do

They really get you with the dies man, on everything. I bought the harbor freight tubing roller mainly for the dies, and looking at it as just 3 sets of dies it was (and is) a great bargain.

I've used rubber floor matting (the big roll up sheets for garage floors) attached with rivnuts for wheel well splash protectors with pretty good luck, but I don't live where it snows.

1.25" is a sweet spot strength wise and visually for the "trim" work, doesn't look too bulgy but can still take a good bashing.

What kind of bender are you using and what is your general location? A member here might be able to help you out or know someone who can.

I never ask anyone for help. Make what I have work or get what works.

    I have a jd32 and love it.

I can dig the not asking for help, I hate to borrow tools or ask for help as well. It would be a good deal if someone or some company offered tube bender rentals at a reasonable price with various dies available. That is one tool that makes sense for most to rent, especially economically. Might be a good side hustle - have them put cash down (whatever you paid for the tool and dies) and give them the cash minus rental fee back when they bring it back in good condition, or buy another if they don't return it.

Do you use it manually or with a hydraulic setup? The jd32 looks like a great bender, I've seen alot of pros use it.

    Frank's boots.

I pretty much only wear boots these boots. A pair last 3 years or so.

Nothing else holds up. Flat soled shoes and boots tear me up.

I have a harbor freight 20 ton press. I made a "V" bending jig with angle iron and it works great. You maybe limited depending depending on radius and length of material. I'm sure there's videos on it.

Burn baby burn. Starting to feel like it might survive the rocks. Still need to plate back to the frame. Get alittle more strength thereName: 20190818_104117.jpg

Lol yes. They are 3" coils sagged down to about 1.5" of lift. Wich is perfect the less lift the better.

I need to do track bar and steering then look at making long armsName: 20190819_231413.jpg

Nice flex! With that amount of flex did you check to make sure you're going to clear the bumpers at full wheel stop? I'm sure you did but I've been known to forget a step or two and get ahead of myself.

A heavy bumper done right suspension wise is an asset for certain offroad situations. The weight is right where you want it for climbing up a bouncy incline, but of course it's a balance as overall lighter is better. Kind of funny you see some old machines doing real well with mediocre leaf suspension due to old flexy leafs and frames, they add to those RTI numbers.

from my birds eye view behind the keyboard that looks like an exceptionally long weld on that rail plate.

No welds. All bolts and rivets. Cussing more, Fighting rivets. I've drilled ground torches beat. Nothing easy. Drilling seems to be working best.
