The thread title should be changed to I CAN ONLY GET ONE AT A TIME.

I can’t do side work to fund my addiction as my skill set is such that my collection of tools would consist of a carpentry hammer and a few bent nails.

Fortunately being retired gives me time to buy and sell welders and equipment to fund and upgrade my toys.

OK, fair enough. I shoulda made it "I will eventually end up with one of each, but the first one I will need next spring to use to build a grinder to use to build another tool to use to build..."

Since I started this thread, IN MY MIND, I've already bought a 4x6 saw, added a bunch of upgrades from a hydraulic lowering cylinder with pressure gauge, a coolant system, a brush that cleans the blade as it goes by, custom stand/cart, a better table for use in vertical position (which stays on and acts as a stop to keep small cut pieces from getting slung off the saw), to an idea I have for quick and easy adjustable 90 degree, 45 degree, etc stops (that also hinge out of the way) for the vise, to extended jaws and a a large angle bracket extended rest to clamp small pieces from the front side.

Concerning a plasma cutter, I've already thought of a pantograph table design for quickly copying or cutting out multiples of the same piece, or tracing plan designs to cut pieces, and it also includes a drill powered acme screw and half nut (to engage and disengage it) on one axis for making super smooth, consistent straight cuts. I also have an idea for a new welding table design and the plasma pantograph will be ideal for making the parts.

Then it hit me...the whole point originally was to get a cutting tool to cut 3/8 material to make a 2x72 grinder for my knife making. Just today I found myself looking at metal lathes and mills and thinking about where in my shop they would fit.

    It's a disease, I swear it is......

Check out the bandsaw thread somewhere here on WW.

psa, BD1 and others have great tips and pictures to keep you busy planning on acquiring more tools for the modifications.

My light industrial bandsaw came with a coolant system, but I don't use it. Terry told me about a "cool stick" that I just apply when I'm using it. Much less mess...

One solution I haven't seen mentioned here is building tools you want/need. I don't recommend starting on a locomotive, be realistic about your skill set and tools available to you. By building your own equipment/tools you should develop new skills and improve old ones. In building things you will realize the satisfaction of building something yourself. Also, before you discard anything look at it with an eye toward re using parts of it for future projects. I hand draw projects in my leisure time and these drawings will be improved, at least in my mind, several times before actual building starts. This reduces wasted time and materials. I also try to visualize parts that can be used with little modification to make what I want to make. As your skills improve, or your use of a DIY project dictates a change, you can modify it to suit, or sell it and build a better mousetrap. There are tons of good resources out there to tap, "homemade tools.com", "Pinterest", "Practical Machinist", of just Google DIY"your project"
    Good luck!

Re: I can only get one..

Yes, I need (ok, want) a tool to cut 3/8" material (quickly and easily) to be used to build the Jeremy Schmidt grinder for grinding knives. But, since I tend to tinker with so many other things, I was trying to consider other cutting uses for that same tool, for example sheet metal to help my son with the body work on his 1980 Mercury Capri (we're building a hotrod), or for any other metal cutting tasks I might want/need. The grinder itself will also be pressed into service for other grinding needs as well. I need a bigger welding table too, and so on and so on....

It's the typical shop dude's dilemma, get one tool to help make another and suddenly you have all sorts of ideas and plans for the next thingamabob or "creative" ways to abuse, er, I mean use the one you just built...

Of course it all culminates at the point where I spend several thousand dollars in overly priced steel and various motors and electronic gizmos so I can make my own $20 part...to which I'll sooth my raw nerves with the notion that it was "hand-crafted with love by an artisan!"

been doin this for 41 years... still don't have all the tools I think I need even though have filled 2 shops three 53' semi trailers and two 40' shipping containers with various equipment.... back when it all started I thought I'd be happy if I just had an oxy/acet torch and a grinder to go with my lincoln 225 buzz box.... hmmm still got that old grinder somewhere
