BED FRAME ANGLE IRON: what kind of metal is it?

The last time I drilled bed frame I used a carbide masonry bit, it actually worked pretty well.
 
I was actually cutting some bed rail today with a grinder and cutoff wheel. Usually cuts good but whaaaaw, hit a spot that was like titanium. I guess that hard spot was from a big block out of an 87 Buick. Drilling usually sucks and I have blown holes in it with a stick welder just to avoid drilling.
I've used masonry bits to drill it.
