Re: Best portable engine drive welder

I just love the 1966 Red Face. Had the engine rebuilt a couple years ago. The Vantage 400 is only a couple months old. I’m really starting to like it too.

He bought all of them to see if he could find one that welds as good as a miller:laugh:
Oh I use to own one of them too. ;)

Yes the Vantage is a diesel. Here in the Seattle area, not a lot of dust. Mostly mud.

Yeah it is very hard to beat a 100% copper generator. I’m still learning the Vantage. I really like the arc force! For open root pipe welding it is great!
When SMAW with the Vantage I leave it on automatic idle, so when you strike an arc it jumps up the RPMs.

Re: Best portable engine drive welder

I like 6010 5P+ the best for this type of application. Better toughness and ductility. This arm is subject to too much shock forces and 7018 is too brittle.
You keep saying that, and I don’t understand at all:confused::confused:. But, I’m fairly new to welding.
Here are some pictures of the fillet weld break test I did on 7018 right out of the oven. Notice how the top plate got beat down on the bottom plate? And I had to beat it back the other direction to break it off. Also notice how the end view of the top plate, how it is bent?

Most people don't have your experience or equipment.
Are you talking to me? If so I’m just a hobbyist / pretend welder.;)
Here is the 6010 fillet weld break test.

No I hit the plate on the back side of the weld, (weak side of weld)

My definition of portable, is anything this crane can pick up!

One thing that is really nice about SA-200 short hoods. Is how effortlessly they stack 6010. Childs play to run 6010 with them.

Yes that was whip and pause. Videos? I just got a new cell phone. I need to get my granddaughter to show me how to answer it when someone calls me.
What surprised me is how well my Everlast PowerArc 200ST, can stack 6010.

The PA-200ST has automatic hot start and arc force. I use to have a PA-300, but I gave it to my brother-n-law. It had adjustable hot start, and arc force. I think this 200ST has the edge over the 300. The lug hole on the left is the 6010 port. You place the ground lead in there when you want to run 6010. I Tig weld with the PA-200ST, but I use a Tig rig. I just can’t get the hang of that lift arc. So I use scratch start. Far as 6010, and 7018, the PA-200ST welds every bit as nice as the V350-Pro.
Here is what the PA-200ST can do with 7018.

The PA-300 settings were real close to the V350-Pro. The PA-200ST runs about 15 to 20-AMPS hotter than the V350-Pro. Lugweld told me the reason the PA-200ST runs hot is because of the automatic arc force.

Hot start means nothing to me! In the few weeks I’ve been welding, I’ve got pretty good at starting a rod.
