Workflow: CAD and Mesh Models
eight years after.... re-launch.
presenting an experienced-based, clean pipeline for creating CAD-based (ie. parametric, direct modeling) and polygonal-based (ie. mesh) models. software selection/use and workflow predicated upon use case and "end state" for the 3D model and digital/physical asset:
* * *
shape/form exploration, concept art, and asset development: Plasticity, Alias, Blender
detailed design, 3D solid models and 2D shop drawings: Solidworks, Fusion 360
color, materials, finishes; rendering: Blender
compositing: Affinity Photo 2

commentary:
Plasticity excels as a direct-modeler in creating both solid (boolean) and surfacing (xnurbs) assets. Plasticity uses a destructive workflow; however, the tool is analogous to digitally sculpting in clay. Although not as powerful as ZBrush, Plasticity is 'CAD for Artists' with a grass-roots vibe and strong/active Discord community. the seamless "bridge" between Plasticity and Blender is hypergolic. outstanding for exporting assets requiring additive (3D printing) in the polymer (ie. thermoplastics, thermosets) and metallic space. annual subscription ($300), non-cloud based application, with super periodic updates based on user input. impo, Plasticity is the cleanest, most powerful, cost-effective CAD tool to hit the 3D modeling space in 20yrs. Plasticity shines like a diamond for primary surfacing work (eg. aerospace, automotive, industrial design).
Blender, a free software, once loaded out with both paid and free add-on tools is starting to supplant Maya, Cinema 3D, and other mesh modelers used for asset creation, animation, and PBR (physics based rendering). Blender is ubiquitous within the weapon design, concept art, and sci-fi asset community. Blender uses a non-destructive workflow with subD (subdivision surfacing) capabilities. the path-tracing Cycles rendering engine is excellent. Key add-on tools include: hard ops, boxcutter; machin3 tools, mesh machine, kit ops, design magic; material works; quad remesher; zen bbq, zen uv. also excellent in exporting assets for additive (3D printing) domain.
Solidworks, Fusion360: parametric-based 3/2D CAD with a non-destructive (ie. time history) workflow. excels at mechanical design and for creating assets that require cnc maching, bending, laser cutting or water jetting. $$$ Solidworks, $ Fusion360.
Alias: the gold standard for primary surfacing and class-A (strak) work in automotive and aerospace.
Affinity Photo 2: alternative software to Adobe Photoshop. one-time, universal license fee of $70. zero need for the convoluted, monthly subscription surrounding Adobe PS.
p.s.
* artists/designers desiring a powerful program for applying CFM and for "baking" (think: weps/assets used in video games) are encouraged to explore both Adobe Substance Painter and Marmoset Tool Bag.
* Houdini is a tier-1 tool for 3D animation, VFX, simulations, and PBR.
