You can do it but it is a little tricky, the primary coil of the main transformer is actually two coils connected in series on a 460 unit. The diagram makes it look like one coil but it is two. The tap connection of the coils is an external connection, you can cut the splice apart and reconnect the coils in paralell, then reconnect the fan motor leads with the transformer leads across the load side of the on off switch. I have done this on 3 or 4 units and it works.
