Thermite burns super hot, but is not explosive. He has more videos on the making of the launcher and the theroy behind thermite, so it is cool to watch it all.

For reference, iron III oxide is normal red rust. In other words it is very common on any ferrous product that has been exposed to the environment, including shavings from grinding. So mostly steel grinding plus a little aluminum means it is not crazy to think you could make a 3:1 thermite mix. Lighting it is harder, and it should be small as it is limited by the amount of raw materials in the system (alum plus Fe2O3). So fire? possible. Explosion? much less likely unless there are other circumstances contributing.
