The aluminum powder used in making up "flash powder" is what's known as German (or Indian) Dark. It's been milled (like in a ball mill) to a fine particle size along with charcoal. The charcoal acts to coat the fine aluminum particles to keep them from oxidizing. It's one of the two components in a basic exploding target.

This won't yield a dust explosion (at least not yet any way) but it will generate one hell of large fireball that you can feel the heat off of from a pretty good distance a way.

It works with both wood and grain dust. Fine sanding dust from a cabinet shop works really good.
