My new Thermal Dynamics 51 came with what is by pn# drag tips but did not come with the little 4 point tip I see in numerous Thermal Dynamics pictures. The manual isn't real clear on what tips are used for what or what method should be used for each tip. I have been practicing to see which method cuts the cleanest, and so far I seem to do best with the standoff guide installed. What is the benefit to dragging vs. a standoff cut or visa-versa? How do most of you guys cut? What's the purpose of the little 4 point tip?

OK thanks for all the info guys. Sooo if I don't have the 4 point drag cap but I'm using pn# 8-8207 drag tips then it's OK to drag (which I already have been doing). IF I get the pn# for what are simply called cutting tips will that change the cut?

OK. I'm gonna take the answer as a YES, it's alright to drag IF the tip is designed to drag. The tip that is currently in the gun is pn# 9-8207 "drag tip" the machine came with 5 of them. I also have 2 other tips pn# 9-8208 simply called "cutting tips". I have yet to try this tip. I think I'll try using the "cutting tip" with the standoff guide and see how it works. The drag tips seem to work just fine when dragging directly on the material with out much wear showing on them.
