Customer had a basketball pole made from 6x8x3/8 rectangle tube. It had a 1/4” thick base on it that was failing, wanted a more substantial base. Cut off the old stuff to start fresh.

The new base will be 18”x21”x1/2” thick. Laid out the hole pattern and got out the trusty mag drill.

Prep work to get rid of the mill scale. It is clamped to a 1/2” piece of plywood, I made him a template for anchor install. He is going to pour a new pier, and will be using J-anchors when he pours the concrete.

Next was getting everything squared with the pole.

I used .045 dual shield in the trusty ol’ miller.

The passes around the base, single pass around the gusset’s.

Completed project!

Thank you! This week I have scales to put on a feed truck, so no cool pics there. Then a few tractors to service, nothing exciting there either, I hope! After that, my Amish neighbor is putting in a sawmill. I will be building the log skid deck and line drive system for him, so that will be some interesting stuff.

That’s a heck of a square never seen one like that !
Nice job
Thank you! The square is a Fireball tool iron square. It’s a beast, but I kind of wish I would have gotten the aluminum one instead. But it’s nice, heirloom quality!
