Hey all,

My current leather jacket for stick and MIG is toast. Several of the buttons have pulled through and it has several shredded areas that have split...time for a replacement.

I'm looking at the Black Stallion Color Block leather welding jacket and Miller's Split Leather jacket. Anybody have either of them? BS has a sizing chart, but Miller doesn't seem to (or at least that I can find). I'm going to stop by a local Baker's Gas to see if they have either available to try on, but if someone here has info I'd love to hear it.

I'm open to other options, but I do have a lighter jacket I use for TIG and quick MIG projects. These are the two I'm looking at:

I've been using Weldmark leather. the price is good and it seems to hold up well. Once in a while I'll pop a snap so I got a snap replacement kit, doesn't take long to fix one.
Wow...$1K for a jacket is a bit more than I was looking to spend!

I started with a leather jacket from the thrift stores best dress welder. Later I got real welders jack. I got X-large so put coat under for winter. It work out I gain weight over forty years and still a little loose without a coat.

Dave

FYI The leather jacket I used only for welding because of cost. I watched other welders use jacket for everthing and look like it. The jacket out lasted 4 hoods. Take care of and last a long time

Huh? I don't think I ever paid more than $100 for one.

Yep. I hang mine up in the house when I'm not using it.

Get enough dried sweat in them, you can just stand them in the corner. But when mine get nasty I throw them in the washer with a good dose of Woollite soap, then hang dry, and put them in the dryer with no heat while still slightly damp. they come out nice and soft and don't seem to harden up.

Check which is the most flexible and the lightest. Some of the Miller jackets are heavy and quite stiff. You want to have easy arm movement without getting fatigued with a heavy hot jacket. Maybe a hybrid jacket would be a good option.

The first page hit was for a Weldmark split leather jacket for slightly over $1K. I just went back...it was a pack of 12 jackets. Oops! :)

For MiG and stick wear a long sleeve cotton shirt with starch, bdu’s work good. Do use good gloves.

I have plenty of options like that, but there are times when I want a heavier, thicker coat for a variety of reasons.

Yup! I have a MCCUU top out in the shop that I usually wear when I'm welding. I rarely break out the leather jacket unless I'm welding overhead or something like that.

I prefer a half jacket for doing overheard or where I need better arm/shoulder protection.
Normally my preference too, but if I have to lay on my back under something or gouge in tight spots it's the jacket. I have several lengths of bibs for the cape sleeves too, belt buckle length or nearly knee length, those are nice to protect your lap in sitting positions. A set of chaps is good to have at times too.
I'd like to thank all those cattle that help protect my hide.

I have Lincoln's heavy, medium, lightweight coats and sleeves.
