Greetings,
I need to shorten an automative half shaft for a front wheel drive race car - we need a shorter axle to allow us to increase camber.
Based on what I've read, the native axle shaft is most likely 4140 - and has been case hardened.
I've split the axle, shortened it and am going to machine a cylindrical "sleeve" out of 8620 that will slip over the two halves of the axle.
Can anyone give me any advice on welding these together as effectively as possible? Any suggestions on pre-heat, post weld heating, tempering etc.?
Thanks!
Dave
