Do just like you said. Drill grind weld. Bevel thru the drill hole so you can get full penetration. Or grind past the crack a ways(depending on length of crack) and weld till the groove is full. If this is structural you might need to post some pics. Don't want somebody getting hurt over misunderstood info.
