I would like to ask all of you rig welders what rod do you carry on your trucks? It would be nice to know the type and size. Just wanting to see what the rest of you do.

I carry 1/8" 6010, 1/8" 7010, 1/8" 6013, 5/32" 7010, and 3/32" 7018.

Thanks for you Replies!

I dont have a "rig/pipline" truck, but we keep 10 LB tubes full:
3/32 6011, 7018
1/8 6011, 7018
3/32 & 1/8 308 Esab
.035 Hard wire for the suitcase

75% of what we do is container repair so we keep 50LB cans of 1/8 6011 on every set up.

Some of the inventories here kinda have me wondering...why?

Why 6010 and 6011 both
Why so many different sizes of 7024
Why 4 different sizes of 6010

I AM NOT being judgemental and I know we all do different types of work and on different types of material, I just never saw the need myself for so much inventory. But that's just me..........I like to keep things as simple as possible.

3/32. 6010,7018,7016
1/8. " " " " " "
5/32. 6010,7018
3/16. 6010,7018
308,309,and 316 tig wire in various sizes
The reason I carry so many different rods and is because I can go from a 16" sch 80 weld to a 2" sch 40 weld in the same day or I may have to use a different procedure or process on certain lines I work on through out the day

One day this summer Istarted off the morning welding a stainless pieces on some bottling equipment at one of the local wineries. Next I went to a local garage and welded the broken exhaust manifold on an old Chevy truck-while it was still on the truck. Old Mr. Burkett called about that time and said he was broke down in a big plowed field and needed something on his disc harrow welded. About a pound of 7018's later and I was on my way to the real job of the day, a metal building the hands were working on. Welded clips on for the rest of the day with 6010's.

Yeah, I carry a bunch of rods, but I'm prepared for most stuff.

I carry 6011, 6013, and 7018 in 3/32 and 1/8 inch on my truck.

But by a giant margin, I use 1/8 6011 the most. I probably go through 10 pounds of it for every pound of anything else. This is for carports, metal buildings, pipe fences, and some trailer work I do mostly.

A 50# of 4mm 6P+ or 5/32 5P+,
a 50# of 5/32 70+ or Hyp+,
a 50# of 3/16" 70+,
a 50# of 5mm 8P+.

Some jobs, I will have some 10# of 3/32, 1/8 and 5/32 8018.

It really depends on the job at hand......

6010 - 3/32, 1/8, 5/32

7018 - 3/32, 1/8, 5/32, 3/16

I went through my truck a while back and took some rods out. I removed 3/16 6010 and 1/4 7018. The 3/16 6010 was great and when needed can get a serious pile of welding done fast but I had only used it once in a few years. Similar story with the 1/4 18,, never really used it so I pulled it to save space and weight.
