" had a POS mitering small Chinese bandsaw for a year. Drove me nuts.
scrapped it and got an Ellis 1600 and never looked back.
it was almost 5 times the price, but it works!"

I have a small Jet and its in the shop again, ( twice in a year ). There parts support is miserable they take forever then send the wrong parts.

Get a Ellis or a Wellsaw ( miters off the vise ).

Of the chicom stuff look at Saber ( maybe Taiwan ) I have worked on one of their $10K units it cut nice but it was new, I wouldn't have bought it but it wasn't my dollars.

A test of a bandsaw is not when there new, its 3-5 years out, parts support, and how well the parts are holding up. Ellis is not perfect I have a friend with a either a 2000 or 3000 ( duh memory ) and the upper bearings were trouble, Ellis has since done a fix on those, and the Hyraulic arm could be better, but he runs a production shop uses it alsmost daily and its about 4 years old, he likes it a lot.

If you look on E-bay there is a vendor there that sells Ellis 1600's about as cheap as you will find one, they are almost $1000.00 more here locally.

I just bought a Jet 5x6 and love it, except for the Off switch is hard to tune to shut off on time. I was up in Bellingham last week at the Grizzly Ind. and they also carry Southbend machines including band saws. Their similar saw seems to have a better hardware and surface finish for about the same price as jet, maybe a little more. Check them out online.

Ed Mac how has the saw held up for you 3 years later? I am indecisive on a cold saw or swivel bandsaw and am leaning toward the grizzly saw. Is it really 63" from front to back? I am trying to figure out placement for it and that would be huge.

Grizzly is good for the price. I have a grizzly bandsaw. It is nice. Baileigh Is even better. I like my baileigh cold saw, and later when I need a better bandsaw Ill either get a Baileigh or ellis.

I'll have to highly recommend the Ellis 1800 too. I have owned Ellis equipment for 15+ years and have had little if any issues.
The 1600 and 1800 are great machines. The portability of the 1600 is a plus if space is an issue.

I like the Ellis for a smaller saw. They work well, just don't over do the downfeed.

The one thing I miss the most from working at my old employeer is my elllis 1800 band saw. I will plan on getting a ellis 1600 for my shop in the next year. They are USA MADE!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all your help, this is kind of a big investment for me and i need to make sure I buy the right tool for the job.
Yup I've used a FMB (italian) that was almost identical except it was a little bigger 10" capacity, had dual miter, 45 deg. one way, 60 deg. the other and didn't have the semi auto feature.great machine until you had to get parts.

Also used another FMB single miter 18" capacity fully automatic. Thing was unstoppable. I'd guess it ran for over 4 hrs a day,6 days a week, 52 weeks a year for over 10 years before any major trouble hit. And the major trouble was not major, replaced pump impeller for coolant pump, replaced pin on lift/drop cylinder rod end, cus most users thought greasing machine was optional.

Used a couple of old kalamazoo's, too. but none were swivel head miter, they were swivel work vise, which I hated.

    Re: Mitre bandsaw recommendations?

I've been using my Baileigh BS210M since Feb. 09, and I love it. Priced right, quality stuff, and good customer service, too. Single miter to 60 degrees, up to 8.25" capacity. This should do well for me for years to come, judging by the build quality it should easily last that long. Made in USA.

    Re: Mitre bandsaw recommendations?

I have been wanting one for a long time. I have checked out the ones from JET and Grizzly but have never cut with one. Only mitering band saw I have cut with was a really huge one at the local college vo-tech shop that would take up way too much space in my shop and cost way more than I would want to spend. It does make excellent smooth accurate cuts.
