To clarify, I'm generally all for "free trade" and oppose protective tariffs in principle, but that's assuming there's a level playing field between countries (i.e., that the countries on each side are "free" countries that don't use things like slave labor). If a protective tariff dis-incentivizes a country like China from using slave labor by reducing their profits, I'm a little more accepting of it...

The playing field isn't really "level" if one country is cashing-in on slave labor, and the other country isn't -- even as its industries struggle to survive under the burden of taxation, regulation and punitive sanctions like a "carbon tax." In a situation like that, countries like China just get more and more powerful -- building a new coal-fired power plant every 2 weeks -- while countries like the US and UK just get more and more hobbled by policies that pretend to "save the planet."

Absolutely, and free trade makes the world in general, a richer place... wealth generation, all that.

The problem is when a certain country has an unfair advantage in the lack of import tarriffs. It cost more to import from France via ship, than it costs to air-freight something directly from China. There's something bitterly wrong here. Never mind the "environmental" hypocrisy.

I love my country and where i live (I'm in the countryside, not an overcrowded town or city!) and i don't mind most of how the country is ran... but the unrestrained import from china is something I despise.

On a brighter note, I've been stopping by all the little Ma and Pop places around here thinking I might find an old dusty pipeliner sitting on a shelf somewhere. Well, not quite, but close enough.

I'm not sure if they just had it sitting out for looks or something, but I think they just about swallowed their tongues when I picked it up and asked how much it was. And I almost forgot how crystal clear the old glass lenses were.

    Just needs new headgear.

Shoot, they'll be sitting inside their ivory fortress while using our tax dollars to build dwellings that will probably be nicer than half us tax payers could afford to build.

As far as I'm concerned,,,,,,the "immigrants" can go live with mad max, and the rest of the wealthy "elected officials" who are VERY WEALTHY at our expense.

Its supply and demand. Not unlike anything else in this world. If I own the supply I can demand the price. Works with gasoline, lumber, concrete, on and on, on and on.

Biggest problems over here is things like plastics, foam (directly linked to the global lack of ethylene and associated precursors) and now wood and steel... the suez canal backing up hasn't helped matters any, but now we're running out of those things that are cheaper to produce in China, things like steel Z purlins which are all on container boats as we speak. We have enough steel for now in country, even though they talked about shutting down one of the biggest mills... but stupid secondary materials like Z purlins, we're short of.

Makes me mad, all this. Hopefully this sudden lack of trade goods makes us think again as a nation about producing our own friggin stuff. We CAN do it, we're good at it... the problems mainly lying with international takeovers and shareholder profits. Makes me mad.

    Fiberglass https://www.compositesworld.com/news...nomic-recovery

Plastics...........Storm Uri in Texas caused total shutdowns in the petrochemical refineries/plants. They're still recovering. https://www.businessinsider.com/plas...terials-2021-3 If they're up and running, which I couldn't tell ya...........you know there has to be a huge backlog.

Re: Is there a Fibre shortage ?

Seems like I heard something about a plastic shortage too. Something about the places that sit next to the oil refineries and make the resin being shut down... Or maybe that was just when it snowed in Texas and the windmills crapped out?

Re: Is there a Fibre shortage ?

Our high speed internet (finally, up and running this week!!) was delayed, so we were told, due to the lack of the glass cable !??
(The delay of our high speed connection was delayed over one year)

Maybe fiberglass matte, and internet cable is made out of the same type sand!??
Actually, we also heard that anything to do with high speed internet was delayed because of lack of workers,
they were not working because of COVID,,

I would imagine that fiberglass falls into the same dilemma,, workers are at home, rather than making product.
Are welding helmets considered "critical" ??

Oh well,, we have our high speed internet,, maybe now, the welding helmets will start to show up!!
